Delhi Fire Tragedy: PM Modi Announces Compensation After 21 Killed in Malviya Nagar Blaze
New Delhi, June 3: A devastating fire that engulfed a hotel-and-restaurant building in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar area on Wednesday morning has left at least 21 people dead and dozens injured, triggering a massive rescue operation and renewed questions over fire safety compliance in the national capital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ex-gratia compensation for victims' families as authorities launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze.
The fire broke out in a multi-storey building housing a restaurant on the lower floors and accommodation facilities above. Thick smoke rapidly spread through the structure, trapping guests and staff inside. Emergency teams rushed to the scene after receiving distress calls during the morning hours.
Officials said more than 40 people were rescued from the building and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Several survivors suffered burn injuries and smoke inhalation, while others were rescued from windows and upper floors by firefighters and local residents.
PM Modi Announces Financial Assistance
Reacting to the tragedy, Prime Minister Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced financial support through the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
In a message shared by the Prime Minister's Office, Modi said the incident was tragic and extended condolences to the families of those who died. He also wished a speedy recovery for the injured. The PM announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased victim and ₹50,000 for every injured person.
"The loss of lives due to a fire incident in Malviya Nagar, Delhi is tragic. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured," the Prime Minister said.
How the Fire Unfolded
According to preliminary information, the blaze started in the building during the morning hours. Multiple fire tenders were dispatched immediately after emergency services received alerts. Firefighters battled intense flames and heavy smoke for several hours before bringing the situation under control.
Eyewitness accounts painted a horrifying picture. Videos circulating on social media showed people hanging from windows and shouting for help as smoke engulfed the building. Some occupants reportedly jumped from upper floors in desperate attempts to escape.
Residents of the neighbourhood joined rescue efforts before emergency personnel fully secured the area. Several injured victims were carried to ambulances by local volunteers and police personnel.
Foreign Nationals Among Victims
Officials indicated that several of those killed were foreign nationals, many of whom had reportedly travelled to Delhi for medical treatment. The Malviya Nagar area, located close to major healthcare facilities in South Delhi, frequently hosts international patients seeking affordable treatment and accommodation.
Authorities have not yet released a complete list of victims, and identification efforts are continuing. Consular authorities are also expected to be informed in cases involving foreign citizens.
Investigation Underway
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire department officials and forensic teams are examining the site to determine whether the blaze was triggered by an electrical fault, kitchen-related accident, or another factor.
Investigators are also expected to examine whether the building complied with mandatory fire safety regulations, including emergency exits, fire alarms, smoke detectors and occupancy limits.
Fire safety experts note that many commercial and hospitality establishments in densely populated urban areas often face scrutiny over inadequate compliance with safety norms. Preliminary reports suggest authorities may also review licensing and operational approvals linked to the property.
Delhi Government and Emergency Response
Emergency response agencies, including the fire department, police, ambulance services and disaster management teams, coordinated rescue efforts throughout the day. Senior officials monitored operations on the ground as hospitals prepared to receive victims.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed sorrow over the incident and said all necessary medical assistance was being provided to affected families. Rescue and relief operations continued even after the flames were extinguished as officials searched for any remaining victims inside the damaged structure.
A Recurring Safety Concern
The Malviya Nagar tragedy has once again brought attention to fire safety concerns in Indian cities. Fatal fires in residential buildings, commercial complexes and hospitality establishments have repeatedly exposed gaps in enforcement and preparedness.
Urban planning experts argue that overcrowded localities, unauthorized modifications, blocked exits and inadequate inspections often increase the risks during emergencies. Wednesday's incident is likely to intensify demands for stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations across metropolitan areas.
For residents across India, including cities such as Kolkata, Haldia, Durgapur and Siliguri, the disaster serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety compliance in public buildings, hotels, restaurants and residential complexes.
What Happens Next
Authorities are expected to release a detailed investigation report in the coming days. Questions surrounding the building's safety clearances, occupancy levels and emergency preparedness are likely to be central to the inquiry.
As grieving families await answers, rescue teams and investigators continue their work at the site. The compensation announced by the Prime Minister may provide immediate financial relief, but the focus now shifts to accountability and ensuring such tragedies are prevented in the future.
