Delhi Police Summons CJP Leaders After Their Release
The Delhi Police Crime Branch has summoned Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka to its Rajouri Garden office for questioning in connection with cases linked to a protest at Jantar Mantar.
The development came on October 22, 2026, a day after the two leaders were released from judicial custody following an order by a Special Executive Magistrate. Police have also summoned CJP member Ajinkya Shinde, according to media reports.
Probe Linked to October 13 Jantar Mantar Protest
The investigation concerns an incident on October 13, when CJP members attempted to enter the Jantar Mantar protest site and unfurl the national flag during a demonstration.
According to police, the group allegedly crossed barricades and entered the area through private premises despite restrictions on the use of the site for protests. The demonstration was reportedly organised to raise objections concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Police detained members of the group and registered two cases relating to the incident. The cases include allegations of trespassing, disobedience of official orders and obstruction of public servants. These remain allegations being investigated by the authorities.
Two Cases Transferred to Crime Branch
The cases registered in connection with the Jantar Mantar incident have been transferred to the Delhi Police Crime Branch for further investigation.
One case concerns alleged trespassing and disobedience of orders, while the other relates to allegations that police personnel were obstructed or assaulted during the incident.
The Crime Branch is examining the circumstances surrounding the protest and the alleged offences. The summons require the leaders to participate in the investigation; they do not, by themselves, establish guilt.
Court Orders Release on Personal and Surety Bonds
Das and Ranka were released from judicial custody on October 21 after a Special Executive Magistrate accepted their personal and surety bonds and recorded written undertakings.
The magistrate directed each leader to furnish personal and surety bonds of ₹50,000 until the conclusion of the inquiry. They were also instructed to appear on hearing dates and comply with the conditions specified in their undertakings.
The court observed that continued judicial custody did not appear necessary at that stage, particularly after the leaders had given written assurances to maintain peace and comply with the law.
Leaders Undertake to Maintain Peace
As part of their written undertakings, the two leaders promised not to disturb public tranquillity or breach the peace. They also undertook not to call for protests at Jantar Mantar until the site was legally restored as a designated protest location, and stated that any future demonstrations would be conducted within the constitutional framework.
The court directed the investigating officer to submit a verification report concerning the sureties. Further proceedings were scheduled for October 23 at 3 pm, with the leaders and their sureties directed to remain present.
Police Had Sought Further Judicial Custody
Before the release order, Delhi Police had sought a further three-day extension of the leaders’ judicial custody, citing concerns about a possible breach of peace and law and order.
Police also referred to alleged differences between statements made by the leaders before the court and comments they subsequently made to the media. The magistrate ultimately ordered their release after considering the undertakings and bond conditions.
What Happens Next?
The Crime Branch’s questioning is part of the ongoing investigation into the Jantar Mantar protest and the cases registered over the incident.
The authorities will continue examining the allegations and the evidence collected. The legal proceedings remain ongoing, and the allegations against the CJP leaders have not been established as findings of guilt.
