The political focus in Uttar Pradesh has increasingly shifted towards alliance strategy ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, with differences reportedly emerging among INDIA bloc partners over seat-sharing. Against this backdrop, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has urged opposition parties to keep their larger political objective ahead of individual demands.
Yadav said the priority should be to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party rather than concentrate on which party gets a few more seats. He also linked the alliance’s electoral objective with protecting democracy, the Constitution and reservation.
The statement comes amid speculation about tensions between the Samajwadi Party and Congress over the distribution of constituencies for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh polls. Seat-sharing has historically been one of the most challenging aspects of maintaining broad opposition alliances, particularly when multiple parties seek influence in the same electoral regions.
The DMK has now backed Yadav’s position. Party spokesperson T K Elangovan said the alliance should focus on winning the election and defeating the BJP instead of treating the allocation of two or three additional seats as the central issue.
Elangovan emphasised the need for unity among opposition parties, arguing that the larger electoral objective should take precedence over individual party calculations. His remarks indicate that the DMK sees coordination among INDIA bloc partners as important to their prospects in the politically crucial state.
Uttar Pradesh, with its large Assembly and Lok Sabha representation, remains one of the most important battlegrounds in Indian politics. The performance of opposition parties in the state could have a significant bearing on the broader political landscape.
For the Samajwadi Party and its potential allies, maintaining unity while negotiating seat-sharing will therefore be a key challenge. Yadav’s message suggests that the alliance leadership wants to prevent differences over constituencies from weakening the broader opposition campaign.
The DMK’s support adds another voice within the opposition camp calling for a united approach. However, translating this message into a workable seat-sharing arrangement will remain important as the 2027 Uttar Pradesh election campaign takes shape.
