Chennai: A fresh political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after the DMK’s official mouthpiece, Murasoli, criticised Chief Minister Vijay over actor Trisha Krishnan’s presence at the Independence Day celebrations in Chennai.

The controversy centres on the August 15 Independence Day ceremony at Fort St George, where Vijay hoisted the national flag as part of his official duties as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.

Trisha Krishnan was seated in the front row alongside Vijay’s parents during the ceremony. A video from the event also showed Trisha saluting Vijay as he passed by in a jeep while carrying out his official duties.

In an editorial published on August 18, Murasoli strongly criticised the arrangement and questioned the propriety of the interaction during an official state function. The editorial described the episode as “vulgar” and “disgusting” and questioned whether the Chief Minister’s conduct was appropriate for an Independence Day ceremony.

The editorial did not name Trisha directly and referred to her as “an actor”. It questioned why an actor was seated in the front row and highlighted the moment when the two appeared to exchange salutes.

The DMK mouthpiece also claimed that some of Vijay’s supporters and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) voters were uncomfortable with the incident. However, these are claims made in the editorial and have not been independently established.

Murasoli also broadened its criticism to other aspects of Vijay’s administration. The editorial raised allegations of favouritism over the appointment of individuals associated with Vijay’s film career to government-related positions.

The criticism comes amid an increasingly bitter political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu. Vijay, a former actor who entered electoral politics through the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, has emerged as a major political figure in the state.

The Independence Day controversy has therefore become another point of political confrontation between the DMK and the Vijay-led TVK.

Vijay’s party has not yet issued a response to the latest criticism from Murasoli, according to the report.

The episode has also renewed discussion over the conduct and optics expected from public officials during formal government ceremonies, as well as the growing political scrutiny surrounding Vijay and his public appearances.
