Kolkata: A Durga Puja committee in West Bengal is set to give this year's celebrations a distinct political flavour by choosing BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari's life and political journey as its theme.
The proposed theme is expected to showcase different stages of Adhikari's public life, from his early political career to his rise as one of the most prominent Opposition leaders in Bengal.
Durga Puja is one of West Bengal's biggest cultural festivals, and puja committees across the state frequently experiment with themes ranging from mythology and history to contemporary social issues.
The decision to base a puja theme on a living political leader, however, is likely to attract considerable attention.
Adhikari is one of the most prominent leaders of the BJP in West Bengal and has emerged as a key political challenger to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the ruling Trinamool Congress.
The proposed pandal is expected to depict important moments from Adhikari's political journey and could highlight events that have shaped his career.
Adhikari began his political career with the Trinamool Congress and later joined the BJP. His move to the BJP marked a major shift in Bengal's political landscape and was followed by his victory over Mamata Banerjee in the Nandigram Assembly election in 2021.
Since joining the BJP, Adhikari has become one of the party's strongest voices in the state and has frequently attacked the Trinamool Congress government over governance, corruption and political issues.
A theme centred around his life is therefore likely to include references to several important chapters of Bengal's recent political history.
The decision could also spark political reactions, particularly given the highly competitive nature of West Bengal politics. Supporters may view the theme as an expression of admiration for Adhikari, while political opponents could interpret it as an attempt to bring partisan politics into a major cultural festival.
Durga Puja committees in Bengal have historically used their pandals to comment on contemporary events and social issues. The use of a political personality as the central theme represents another example of how the festival can intersect with public life.
The organisers are expected to unveil the full concept and visual design of the pandal closer to the festival.
The theme is likely to attract visitors interested not only in the artistic presentation but also in the political narrative surrounding Adhikari's career.
With Durga Puja being celebrated across Bengal on a massive scale, themed pandals often become major attractions and generate significant public discussion.
The proposed Adhikari-themed puja could therefore become one of the more politically distinctive Durga Puja installations of the year, blending Bengal's cultural traditions with the life story of one of its most prominent contemporary political figures.
