ED Searches 9 Bengal Locations in Property-Grab Probe
The Enforcement Directorate on Friday conducted searches at nine locations across West Bengal in connection with an alleged property-grabbing and money laundering racket. Officials said the raids targeted suspected middlemen, real estate operators, and associates accused of illegally acquiring land and laundering proceeds through shell entities. The searches were carried out in Kolkata and adjoining districts following fresh evidence gathered under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Investigators are examining financial transactions, property documents, and alleged political connections linked to the case.

ED widens Bengal property-grab investigation with fresh raids
The Enforcement Directorate launched coordinated searches across nine locations in West Bengal on Friday as part of an expanding investigation into an alleged property-grabbing racket involving suspected money laundering, forged ownership documents, and illegal land transfers.
Officials familiar with the operation said teams of central investigators carried out simultaneous raids in Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, Howrah and nearby areas early in the morning. Electronic devices, financial records, land papers and several digital storage units were seized during the searches, sources said.
The probe is being conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), with the ED attempting to trace what it believes may be a larger network operating through real estate intermediaries and shell companies.
Investigators suspect that illegally acquired land parcels were later sold or transferred through layered financial transactions designed to hide the origin of funds.
Focus on land acquisition pattern
According to officials, the investigation began after multiple complaints alleging forced occupation of land, fraudulent mutation of property records and coercion of original landowners surfaced before state authorities and central agencies over the past year.
The ED is now examining whether proceeds generated through these disputed property deals were diverted into businesses, benami accounts and high-value real estate investments.
A senior ED official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, said preliminary findings suggested “a systematic pattern of land acquisition using intimidation, forged documents and financial laundering mechanisms.”
“Several individuals under the scanner allegedly used front companies and associates to conceal ownership structures,” the officer said.
Authorities have not officially disclosed the names of all those being investigated. However, sources indicated that a few politically connected individuals and local real estate operators are under scrutiny.
Raids begin before sunrise
Residents in parts of Kolkata and surrounding districts reported seeing central security personnel accompanying ED teams shortly after dawn. In some places, investigators remained inside premises for several hours while documents were examined.
At one location in North 24 Parganas, officers were seen carrying boxes of files and electronic equipment from a commercial office linked to a real estate consultancy firm.
Witnesses said access to certain buildings was temporarily restricted during the operation.
An ED source said investigators are particularly interested in transaction trails involving undervalued land purchases and sudden transfers of ownership to companies with limited operational history.
Growing concern over land-related fraud
Property disputes and allegations of illegal land occupation have become a recurring issue in parts of West Bengal, particularly in rapidly urbanising districts surrounding Kolkata. Complaints often involve claims of forged signatures, intimidation of elderly landowners and illegal construction on disputed plots.
Legal experts say the increasing monetisation of peri-urban land has fuelled aggressive competition among developers and local intermediaries.
Kolkata-based property law expert Anirban Chatterjee said the ED’s involvement indicates the case may extend beyond ordinary civil disputes.
“When central agencies invoke money laundering provisions, it usually means investigators suspect proceeds of crime were circulated through banking channels or layered investments,” he said.
He added that digital payment trails and shell company structures have become central to such probes.
Political reactions intensify
The searches quickly triggered political reactions in the state.
Opposition parties alleged that land-related corruption had become institutionalised and demanded stricter monitoring of property transactions. Leaders from the BJP claimed the raids exposed “deep-rooted corruption networks” operating with local protection.
The ruling Trinamool Congress, however, accused central agencies of selective targeting and politically motivated action ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
A senior Trinamool spokesperson said the party had “no connection with illegal property activity” and urged agencies to conduct impartial investigations.
“Anyone found guilty should face legal action, irrespective of political affiliation,” the spokesperson said.
The political confrontation surrounding ED actions has become increasingly sharp in West Bengal over the past few years, especially after several high-profile investigations involving recruitment scams, financial irregularities and municipal corruption.
Impact on common residents
For ordinary residents, the latest raids have renewed anxieties surrounding land ownership security and property documentation.
Real estate consultants in Kolkata said many buyers have become more cautious about verifying ownership records before purchasing plots or apartments.
“People are now demanding additional legal verification, mutation history and title clearances,” said a realtor operating in New Town.
The fear of becoming entangled in litigation or fraud has also slowed some smaller land transactions in suburban areas.
In districts where industrial expansion and infrastructure projects are increasing land values, disputes over ownership have become more frequent. Experts warn that weak record digitisation and inconsistent local verification systems continue to create loopholes for fraud.
Documents under forensic review
Sources said the ED may send several seized documents and digital devices for forensic examination. Investigators are expected to analyse financial ledgers, WhatsApp communications, email trails and company registrations connected to the suspected network.
Officials are also examining whether cash generated from disputed land deals was routed into hospitality businesses, construction ventures or high-end residential properties.
The agency may summon additional individuals for questioning in the coming days after reviewing the seized materials.
Legal proceedings linked to the case are likely to continue for several months, especially if investigators establish interstate financial links or identify overseas transactions.
What happens next
The ED has not yet announced arrests in the latest phase of the operation. However, officials indicated that further searches and questioning are possible depending on evidence collected during Friday’s raids.
Investigators are expected to prepare detailed financial trail reports before moving for possible attachment of properties under PMLA provisions.
For West Bengal, the case is likely to remain politically explosive. Land remains one of the state’s most sensitive and economically valuable assets, and allegations involving illegal acquisition inevitably resonate far beyond courtrooms and agency offices.
With central investigators now widening the scope of the probe, attention will remain fixed on whether the case uncovers isolated fraud or a deeper organised network tied to the state’s booming property sector.
