Ex-Bengal Minister Aroop Biswas Appears for Questioning in Messi Event Case

Former West Bengal sports minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Aroop Biswas on Tuesday appeared before the Bidhannagar South Police for questioning in connection with the ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities surrounding Lionel Messi's high-profile event at Salt Lake Stadium in December 2025.

Biswas arrived at the police station in compliance with the latest summons issued by investigators probing complaints related to the organisation of the event, which witnessed allegations of ticket black-marketing, cheating, extortion and major lapses in crowd management.

Probe into alleged irregularities

The investigation stems from complaints linked to the football event featuring Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, which was marred by chaos after thousands of fans complained about overcrowding, ticketing issues and inadequate arrangements at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium.

Police are examining allegations that large numbers of tickets were diverted or sold through unauthorised channels, while investigators are also looking into claims of criminal intimidation and financial irregularities associated with the event's organisation.

Questioning follows multiple summons

Tuesday's appearance marks another round of questioning for Biswas in the case. He had previously received multiple notices from the Bidhannagar Police and had earlier sought legal protection before appearing before investigators.

Officials said the questioning is part of the ongoing effort to establish the sequence of events leading to the alleged mismanagement and determine whether any public officials or organisers played a role in the irregularities.

Messi event under scrutiny

Lionel Messi's visit to Kolkata in December 2025 generated massive excitement among football fans but was overshadowed by disorder at the venue. The event ended amid crowd unrest, prompting widespread criticism and triggering multiple investigations into its planning and execution.

Following the controversy, Aroop Biswas stepped down as the state's sports minister to facilitate what he described as an unbiased investigation into the incident. The probe has since expanded to examine ticket distribution, security arrangements and the overall management of the event.

Investigation continues

Police have not disclosed the details of Tuesday's questioning, and no fresh charges have been announced against Biswas. Investigators are expected to continue examining documents, witness statements and financial records as part of the probe.
