Faridabad, May 30: Residents in parts of Faridabad woke up to a digital blackout on Saturday after the Haryana government suspended mobile internet services in the NIT Zone ahead of a sensitive demolition drive connected to the proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor.

The restrictions came into effect shortly after midnight and were scheduled to remain in force until 10 pm on May 30. Mobile internet services across 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks, along with bulk SMS and dongle-based services, were suspended within a one-kilometre radius of the designated area. Voice calls, broadband connections and certain essential services remained operational.

Authorities said the move was aimed at preventing misinformation, rumours and any possible disturbance to law and order while demolition teams carried out the operation under heavy security deployment.

Why Was the Internet Suspended?

According to the Haryana Home Affairs Department, the temporary suspension was ordered under Section 20 of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, read with the Telecommunications (Temporary Suspension of Services) Rules, 2024. Officials cited concerns that provocative messages or misleading social media posts could inflame tensions during the demolition exercise.

An official familiar with the operation said security agencies had been monitoring online activity for several days before the demolition.

"Whenever a large-scale removal drive involves sensitive structures and public gatherings, there is always a possibility of rumours spreading rapidly online. The suspension was intended to ensure that the operation could proceed peacefully," the official said.

Police personnel, Rapid Action Force units and district administration teams were deployed across the affected areas overnight as bulldozers moved in to clear identified structures.

RRTS Project at the Centre of the Operation

The demolition drive is linked to land clearance requirements for the proposed Gurugram-Faridabad-Noida RRTS corridor, a major regional transport project expected to improve connectivity across the National Capital Region.

The proposed high-speed transit network is designed to reduce travel times dramatically between key urban centres. Planning documents indicate that commuters could eventually travel between Gurugram and Noida in under 40 minutes, while travel between Gurugram and Faridabad could be cut significantly compared to current road travel.

Police officials confirmed that a temple and a mosque were among the structures identified for demolition during the operation. Authorities said both sites fell within the alignment area required for the corridor project.

The presence of religious structures significantly increased security concerns, prompting authorities to strengthen deployment and impose communication restrictions in the surrounding area.

According to local reports, demolition activity began after midnight and continued under close police supervision. Barricades were erected around the zone while entry points were monitored throughout the day.
