New Delhi: The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are increasingly expanding their academic offerings for working professionals, entering a space that has traditionally been dominated by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).
The shift has seen IITs introduce a wider range of programmes, from short-term certificate courses to advanced and postgraduate programmes that allow professionals to continue working while pursuing further education.
The growth of online and blended learning, particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic, has played an important role in this expansion. IITs are now offering programmes in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, electric vehicles, robotics and other technology-driven fields.
Several IITs have also expanded their management and executive education programmes. IITs such as IIT Madras, IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur have been offering programmes designed to help professionals upgrade their skills without taking a break from their careers.
The growing demand is also being driven by rapid technological changes and the need for companies to reskill their workforce. Artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies have created demand for specialised programmes tailored to industry requirements.
IITs are also working with companies and government organisations to develop customised learning programmes aimed at addressing specific skill gaps.
The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of online education and encouraged institutions to explore new ways of reaching learners beyond traditional classrooms. IITs have increasingly used digital platforms and blended learning models to make their programmes accessible to professionals across locations.
While IIMs continue to have a strong presence in executive and management education, IITs are leveraging their expertise in technology and engineering to build a distinct position in the same market.
The expansion reflects a broader change in higher education, with premier technical institutions increasingly focusing on lifelong learning and professional skill development alongside their traditional undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
