Surfeit of Silver Paints a Picture of What Could Have Been for India at Asiad
India’s 27 silver medals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games highlighted both the country’s growing strength and the tougher competition across Asia, with several close finishes preventing potential gold medals.

India finished fourth at the 2026 Asian Games with 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals. While the medal haul was strong, the 27 silver medals also reflected several missed opportunities for gold. Elavenil Valarivan’s 10m air rifle final was one such example, as Japan’s Hinata Taichi produced a stunning finish to take the title. The Games showed that Asian competition has become increasingly difficult, with even personal-best performances not always enough to secure gold.

India’s campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games ended with a haul of 85 medals, including 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze, helping the country finish fourth in the overall standings.
However, the large number of silver medals also created a sense of what might have been. Several Indian athletes came close to winning gold but were denied by strong performances from competitors across Asia.
One of the earliest examples came in the women’s 10m air rifle event. Elavenil Valarivan appeared to be in a strong position, holding a 1.5-point lead before her final two shots. However, scores of 10.4 and 10.1 allowed Japan’s Hinata Taichi to overtake her. Taichi produced 10.6 and 10.2 in her final shots to claim gold.
The result also reflected a broader trend at Aichi-Nagoya: Asian competition has become significantly tougher. Athletes who delivered strong or even personal-best performances could still find themselves finishing with silver.
India eventually finished with 21 gold medals, level with Uzbekistan, while a late surge of silver medals helped secure fourth place. The medal tally therefore tells two stories — India’s continued progress as a sporting nation and the increasingly narrow gap between success and disappointment at the highest level of Asian competition.
