India women's cricket team qualifies for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics; men's team must wait till December 2026

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have confirmed the qualification pathway for cricket's return to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. While the Indian women's team has secured a berth through the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup qualification criteria, the men's team will have to wait until the ICC T20I rankings cut-off on December 31, 2026, to know their fate.

India women's cricket team qualifies for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics; men's team must wait till December 2026

Cricket's long-awaited return to the Olympic Games has taken a major step forward, with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) unveiling the qualification pathway for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The announcement has brought good news for the India women's cricket team, which has officially qualified for LA28, while the Indian men's team will have to wait until December 31, 2026, when the ICC Men's T20I rankings will determine the automatic qualifiers.

India women book Olympic berth

India's women's team secured qualification through the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 qualification route.

Along with Australia, Great Britain (via England) and South Africa, India emerged as one of the highest-placed eligible teams representing their respective continents, thereby earning a direct place in the six-team competition at the Los Angeles Games.

Why the Indian men's team must wait

Unlike the women's event, qualification for the men's competition will be based primarily on the ICC Men's T20I rankings.

The highest-ranked eligible teams from Asia, Africa, Europe and Oceania as of December 31, 2026, will qualify automatically, provided they are within the ICC's top 15 rankings. Since the rankings cut-off is still months away, India's qualification cannot yet be confirmed despite being among the world's leading T20 sides.

How Olympic qualification works

Cricket will feature six teams each in the men's and women's T20 competitions at the Los Angeles Olympics.

Five teams in each event will qualify through ICC rankings and designated qualification criteria, while the sixth and final berth will be decided through the inaugural ICC Olympics Qualifier, scheduled to be held in 2027.

The United States, as the host nation, is eligible for automatic qualification in both competitions, provided its men's and women's teams remain inside the ICC's top 15 T20I rankings by the prescribed cut-off dates. If the USA fails to meet that requirement, the automatic berth will pass to the next highest-ranked eligible nation.

West Indies face unique challenge

The ICC also clarified that the West Indies cannot participate as a combined team at the Olympics because it is not recognised as a single National Olympic Committee by the IOC.

Instead, a Caribbean representative will have to emerge through a regional qualification process before competing for an Olympic berth via the global qualifier.

Cricket returns after 128 years

The Los Angeles Games will mark cricket's return to the Olympics after 128 years, with the sport having last featured at the 1900 Paris Olympics.

All matches will be played in the T20 format at a purpose-built cricket venue in Pomona, near Los Angeles. Teams will consist of 15-player squads, with the tournament featuring 28 matches across the men's and women's competitions.
