‘Iran will never forget': Tehran's gratitude to India for attending Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's funeral
Iran has thanked India for sending an official delegation to attend the funeral of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, describing New Delhi's presence as a meaningful gesture of solidarity during a period of national mourning.
In a statement, Iranian officials said the country's leadership and people deeply appreciated India's participation, adding that the gesture underscored the enduring relationship between the two nations.
'Iran will never forget'
Expressing gratitude to New Delhi, Iranian authorities said India's decision to send representatives to the funeral reflected the strength of bilateral ties.
"Iran will never forget this gesture by India. It is a reflection of the friendship and mutual respect shared between our two countries."
The remarks came as delegations from several countries travelled to Tehran to pay their respects following the funeral ceremony.
India's representation
India was represented at the funeral by an official delegation, reaffirming its diplomatic engagement with Iran despite evolving geopolitical dynamics in the region.
The Ministry of External Affairs has maintained that India values its longstanding relationship with Iran, with cooperation spanning energy, connectivity, trade and regional security.
The visit was viewed as part of India's broader diplomatic outreach and its commitment to maintaining constructive ties with countries across West Asia.
India-Iran ties
India and Iran share centuries-old civilisational links and have expanded cooperation across multiple sectors over the years.
The two countries have collaborated on strategic infrastructure projects, including the development of the Chabahar Port, which is regarded as an important gateway for India's trade with Afghanistan and Central Asia.
Despite challenges posed by international sanctions and regional tensions, New Delhi and Tehran have continued diplomatic engagement through regular high-level interactions.
International attendance
The funeral drew dignitaries and representatives from numerous countries, highlighting Ayatollah Khamenei's influence in regional and international affairs.
World leaders and diplomatic envoys attended memorial events in Tehran, where Iranian officials received foreign delegations and conveyed appreciation for their participation.
The ceremony also served as a platform for diplomatic interactions between Iranian leaders and visiting representatives from across the world.
Diplomatic significance
Iran's public acknowledgment of India's presence is being viewed as a reaffirmation of the importance both countries attach to their bilateral relationship.
Analysts say such gestures carry symbolic diplomatic value, particularly at a time when regional geopolitics remain fluid and countries are seeking to strengthen longstanding partnerships.
While the funeral marked a solemn occasion for Iran, Tehran's message of gratitude highlighted its intention to preserve and deepen ties with India in the years ahead.
