Karnataka CM Buzz Intensifies as Siddaramaiah, DK Shivakumar Meet Congress High Command Today

The Karnataka political landscape witnessed fresh turbulence on Monday as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar prepared to meet senior Congress leaders in Delhi amid growing speculation over a possible leadership transition in the state government.

The high-level discussions are expected to involve top Congress leadership, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi. Political observers believe the meeting could play a decisive role in determining whether Karnataka will witness a change in leadership or merely a cabinet reshuffle aimed at calming internal tensions within the party.

The latest round of speculation comes as the Congress government in Karnataka recently completed three years in office. Ever since the party formed the government in 2023, reports of a possible power-sharing agreement between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have repeatedly surfaced in political circles. Supporters of Shivakumar have continued to demand that he be elevated to the Chief Minister’s post as part of the alleged understanding reached during government formation.

Speaking to reporters before leaving for Delhi, Siddaramaiah confirmed that he had been invited by the Congress high command for a meeting but said he was unaware of the exact agenda. Shivakumar, meanwhile, maintained a cautious stance and stated that he would comply with any direction issued by the party leadership.

The Congress leadership has so far avoided making any public commitment regarding a leadership transition. However, the timing of the meeting has added fuel to intense political chatter in Karnataka, especially after several Congress MLAs and ministers openly discussed the need for clarity on the leadership issue.

Sources within the party indicate that discussions may also include a possible cabinet reshuffle. The Karnataka cabinet currently has vacant berths, and several legislators are lobbying for ministerial positions. Political insiders believe that a reshuffle without a change in leadership could strengthen Siddaramaiah’s position and delay Shivakumar’s ambitions to occupy the top post.

Over the past few months, statements from both camps have kept the issue alive. Shivakumar had earlier remarked that “time will answer” questions regarding the Chief Minister’s post, while Siddaramaiah repeatedly asserted that he intends to complete a full five-year term.

The ongoing uncertainty has triggered sharp reactions from opposition parties as well. Leaders from the BJP and JD(S) have accused the Congress of being consumed by internal power struggles instead of governance. At the same time, Congress leaders have tried to project unity publicly, insisting that the final decision rests entirely with the party high command.

Political analysts believe the Congress leadership now faces the difficult task of balancing administrative stability with internal party aspirations ahead of the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections. Any abrupt decision could have long-term implications for factional equations within the state unit.

For now, all eyes remain on Delhi as the Congress leadership weighs its options in one of the party’s most politically significant states.
