Karnataka Plans Three Lalbagh-Style Parks in Bengaluru, Seeks Defence Land Approval from Centre

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has unveiled plans to develop three new Lalbagh-style parks across Bengaluru as part of its efforts to expand the city's green cover and improve urban living. To move the project forward, the state has sought the Central government's approval for the transfer of Defence land identified for the proposed parks.

The proposal was announced after discussions between Karnataka officials and the Union government. According to the state government, the parks are envisioned as large botanical and recreational spaces inspired by Bengaluru's iconic Lalbagh Botanical Garden, one of the city's most prominent green landmarks.

Officials said the project aims to address the growing need for open spaces in Bengaluru, which has witnessed rapid urbanisation and population growth over the past two decades. The proposed parks are expected to feature extensive tree plantations, walking and cycling tracks, lakes, themed gardens, children's play areas and spaces dedicated to biodiversity conservation.

The Karnataka government has requested the Ministry of Defence to transfer or allocate suitable Defence land for the project. Since the identified parcels fall under Defence authorities, the proposal will require approval from the Central government before any development work can begin.

According to the state government, the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to enhance Bengaluru's environmental sustainability, improve air quality and create accessible public spaces for residents. Urban planners have long advocated for the creation of additional large parks to help balance the city's fast-paced infrastructure development.

If approved, the three parks are expected to complement existing green landmarks such as Lalbagh Botanical Garden and Cubbon Park, offering residents more recreational destinations while strengthening the city's ecological landscape.

Officials believe the project could significantly increase Bengaluru's green cover and contribute to climate resilience by preserving biodiversity and reducing the urban heat island effect.

The proposal is now awaiting the Centre's decision on the transfer of Defence land. Once approvals are received, the Karnataka government is expected to prepare detailed project reports, finalise the park designs and begin implementation in phases.
