Call All-Party Meet, Give Time to Study Delimitation: Kharge to PM Modi

New Delhi: Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convene an all-party meeting on delimitation and give political parties adequate time to study the proposed exercise.

Kharge's demand comes amid an intensifying political debate over the future delimitation of parliamentary constituencies and its potential implications for representation in Parliament.

The issue has emerged as a major concern for several Opposition parties, particularly those from southern states, which have argued that states that have successfully controlled population growth should not be penalised through a reduction in their political representation.

Why delimitation matters

Delimitation refers to the process of redrawing the boundaries of electoral constituencies based on changes in population and other constitutional considerations.

The exercise can significantly influence the distribution of seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.

Under the Constitution, the allocation of Lok Sabha seats among states and the division of states into constituencies are subject to periodic delimitation.

However, the allocation of seats among states has been frozen for several decades. The freeze was introduced to encourage states to pursue population-control measures without fearing a corresponding loss of political representation.
