Kolkata Doctor Arrested in ₹50 Cr Medical Fraud Case
Police say patients were pushed into unnecessary procedures as probe widens across private healthcare network
Kolkata, May 18:
A high-profile medical fraud case has shaken West Bengal’s healthcare sector after police arrested a senior doctor from Kolkata for allegedly running a ₹50 crore racket involving fake diagnoses, unnecessary treatments, and inflated hospital bills.
The arrest, made late Sunday night, follows weeks of investigation triggered by multiple complaints from patients and their families who suspected irregularities in treatment recommendations and billing practices.
According to officers of the Kolkata Police, the accused doctor is believed to have been at the center of a network involving diagnostic centres, private hospitals, and middlemen who collectively profited from exaggerated medical procedures.
“This is not a one-person operation,” a senior police official said. “We are looking at a wider network where patients were systematically pushed into unnecessary treatments.”
The case came to light after a patient’s family filed a complaint alleging that a routine health issue had been escalated into a costly surgical procedure, with bills running into lakhs of rupees.
That complaint opened the door.
Investigators soon began examining patient records, billing data, and hospital referrals linked to the doctor. What they found raised serious concerns.
According to preliminary findings, patients were allegedly:
Diagnosed with exaggerated or incorrect medical conditions
Advised costly tests that may not have been necessary
Referred to specific hospitals and diagnostic centres within the network
Charged heavily inflated bills for treatment and procedures
In some cases, patients reportedly underwent procedures that independent medical reviews later deemed avoidable.
The financial scale of the operation is still being assessed.
Police sources estimate that the racket may have generated over ₹50 crore over several years, though the final figure could change as the investigation expands.
Authorities have seized documents, electronic records, and financial data from multiple locations across Kolkata as part of the ongoing probe.
The arrest has sparked immediate public reaction.
In several parts of the city, patients and families expressed anger over what they described as a betrayal of trust. Social media platforms were flooded with posts questioning the ethics of private healthcare providers and calling for stricter regulation.
“This is not just about money,” said a relative of one of the affected patients. “It’s about trust. People go to doctors believing they will be treated honestly.”
Healthcare experts say the case highlights a long-standing concern.
Private healthcare in India operates with a mix of high-quality services and limited regulatory oversight in certain areas. While many institutions maintain ethical standards, cases like this raise questions about accountability and transparency.
“This incident shows the need for stronger monitoring systems,” said a health policy analyst based in Kolkata. “Patients often rely entirely on a doctor’s advice, which creates a power imbalance.”
The legal case is now expected to move quickly.
The accused doctor has been charged under multiple sections related to cheating, criminal conspiracy, and fraud, and will be produced before a court for further proceedings. Police have not ruled out additional arrests as they trace financial links and associated individuals.
The investigation is also examining the role of hospitals and diagnostic centres that may have been part of the network.
That could widen the scope significantly.
In West Bengal, where healthcare access varies widely between urban and rural areas, such cases tend to resonate deeply. For families already struggling with medical costs, the idea of unnecessary treatment adds another layer of concern.
In industrial regions like Haldia, where many residents depend on private healthcare facilities due to limited specialized government services, trust in medical advice is critical.
This case puts that trust under scrutiny.
Government officials have indicated that a review of private healthcare practices may follow, particularly around billing transparency and diagnostic referrals.
For now, the focus remains on the investigation.
Police say more evidence is being examined, more patients may come forward, and the full scale of the operation is yet to be uncovered.
Cases like this rarely end with a single arrest.
They unravel slowly.
And often, they leave behind a difficult question for the system:
How do you rebuild trust once it has been broken?
