Kolkata: Persistent headaches, unexplained nausea and sudden changes in vision are often dismissed as signs of stress, exhaustion or migraine. However, according to a senior Kolkata neurosurgeon with more than 36 years of experience, such symptoms can sometimes point to a far more serious underlying condition — a brain tumour.
The specialist, who has treated thousands of neurological patients over the course of his career, said many individuals delay seeking medical attention because the early signs of brain tumours frequently overlap with symptoms associated with everyday health problems.
“Not every headache indicates a brain tumour, but persistent or unusual symptoms should never be ignored,” the neurosurgeon explained.
According to the expert, recurring headaches that gradually worsen over time are among the most commonly overlooked warning signs. Unlike typical migraines, headaches associated with brain tumours may become more frequent, intensify in the morning or be accompanied by vomiting and neurological changes.
Another symptom that is often misread is persistent fatigue. While stress and demanding lifestyles can cause tiredness, unexplained exhaustion combined with other neurological symptoms may warrant further investigation.
The doctor also highlighted vision-related problems as a key concern. Blurred vision, double vision or unexplained loss of peripheral vision can occur when a tumour affects areas of the brain responsible for processing visual information or increases pressure within the skull.
Changes in behavior, personality or memory are also frequently overlooked. Family members may attribute mood swings, forgetfulness or difficulty concentrating to emotional stress or aging when they could, in some cases, be linked to neurological abnormalities.
Seizures represent another important warning sign. The neurosurgeon noted that a first-time seizure in an adult should always be evaluated thoroughly, as it can sometimes be the initial indication of a brain lesion.
Difficulties with speech, balance or coordination may also emerge depending on the tumour's location. Patients may experience slurred speech, weakness on one side of the body or unexplained problems with walking and motor skills.
The specialist stressed that the presence of these symptoms does not automatically indicate a brain tumour. In many cases, they are caused by far more common and less serious conditions. However, the persistence, progression or combination of symptoms should prompt consultation with a healthcare professional.
Advances in medical imaging and neurosurgical techniques have significantly improved the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumours over the past few decades. Early detection, doctors say, remains one of the most important factors influencing treatment outcomes.
The neurosurgeon encouraged people not to self-diagnose based on internet searches or assume symptoms are solely the result of stress. Instead, individuals experiencing persistent neurological complaints should seek proper medical evaluation.
Health experts emphasize that awareness plays a crucial role in ensuring timely diagnosis. While migraines and stress-related symptoms are common, understanding when signs appear unusual or progressively worsen can help patients access treatment earlier and improve their chances of successful management.
