Kharge Blames PM Modi, Amit Shah for Parliament Deadlock, Says They're 'Afraid' to Face the House

New Delhi: Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday held Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah responsible for the continuing deadlock in Parliament, alleging that both leaders were reluctant to appear in the House and respond to the Opposition's concerns.

Addressing reporters outside Parliament, Kharge said the repeated disruptions during the ongoing Monsoon Session could be resolved if the Prime Minister and the Home Minister participated in discussions on issues raised by the Opposition.

"They are afraid of coming to the House," Kharge alleged, claiming that the government was avoiding accountability on matters including recent student protests, police action and other issues that Opposition parties have sought to debate.

The Congress leader maintained that the Opposition has consistently demanded a structured discussion in Parliament and a detailed response from the government. He argued that meaningful debate is essential for the functioning of a healthy parliamentary democracy.

The remarks come amid continued disruptions in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, with Opposition parties insisting on discussions over several contentious issues. The government has maintained that it is willing to hold discussions under parliamentary rules but has accused the Opposition of repeatedly disrupting proceedings.

Union ministers have urged Opposition MPs to allow Parliament to function normally and participate in legislative business, while Opposition leaders have argued that key national issues must be addressed before regular business resumes.

The prolonged stalemate has affected the legislative agenda of the Monsoon Session, with repeated adjournments in both Houses. Parliamentary Affairs leaders from the ruling alliance and the Opposition are expected to continue efforts to find a consensus and restore normal proceedings.

As the political confrontation intensifies, the functioning of Parliament remains at the centre of the debate between the government and the Opposition.
