Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has launched a fresh attack on the BJP over the implementation of the Annapurna scheme, questioning why women who are supposed to receive financial assistance are allegedly being denied the benefit.
Mamata alleged that beneficiaries are being removed from the scheme's rolls and claimed that women are facing discrimination while attempting to receive the promised assistance.
The TMC chief said her party would identify women who have been denied benefits and raise the issue with the authorities.
Mamata questions benefit delivery
Addressing the issue, Mamata questioned why women were not receiving money under the Annapurna scheme despite being identified as beneficiaries.
She alleged that names of eligible women were being removed from beneficiary lists, creating difficulties for those expecting financial support.
According to the TMC chief, the issue needs to be examined to determine why women who should be receiving the benefit are being left out.
Allegations of discrimination
Mamata also alleged that discrimination was taking place in the process of selecting or retaining beneficiaries.
She claimed that women were being excluded from the rolls and questioned the basis on which their names were allegedly removed.
The allegations have added another point of confrontation between the TMC and BJP in West Bengal, where welfare schemes and their implementation have increasingly become part of the political debate.
TMC to identify women denied benefits
Mamata said the Trinamool Congress would take steps to identify women who have allegedly been denied benefits under the scheme.
The party intends to gather information about beneficiaries who were expecting assistance but did not receive it.
The move could help the TMC document complaints from women and highlight alleged irregularities in the implementation of the scheme.
Welfare schemes become political flashpoint
Welfare schemes have remained an important part of political competition in West Bengal.
The TMC government has frequently highlighted financial assistance and social welfare programmes as part of its governance agenda, while the BJP has sought to expand its political presence in the state by focusing on central government schemes and their delivery.
The Annapurna scheme has now become another issue over which the two parties are trading allegations.
Questions over beneficiary rolls
A central issue raised by Mamata is the process through which beneficiaries are included in or removed from the scheme's rolls.
If eligible women are being removed, questions could arise over the verification process and the criteria being applied.
The TMC has indicated that it wants to identify those affected and examine their complaints.
BJP yet to respond
Mamata's allegations are political claims, and the information provided does not include a detailed response from the BJP addressing each of the allegations.
Any official explanation regarding beneficiary removals, eligibility or payment delays would be important in determining the reasons behind women not receiving assistance.
What happens next?
The TMC is expected to collect details of women who claim they have been denied benefits under the Annapurna scheme.
The party's effort to identify affected beneficiaries could bring individual cases into the political spotlight.
The controversy is also likely to intensify the wider debate over welfare delivery, beneficiary verification and the implementation of government schemes in West Bengal.
For now, Mamata Banerjee's central question remains: why are women who are supposed to receive Annapurna benefits allegedly being left without the promised financial assistance?
