Mamata Vows to ‘Fight or Die’, Targets BJP at Kolkata Protest
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday launched a blistering attack on the BJP during a protest rally in Kolkata, accusing the party of trying to weaken the Trinamool Congress through “bulldozer politics.” Addressing party workers and supporters, Banerjee declared that she would “fight or die” rather than allow what she described as politically motivated attempts to undermine her government and party.

Mamata Banerjee Escalates Political Attack on BJP at Kolkata Dharna
Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee sharpened her political offensive against the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday, declaring that she would “fight or die” in the face of what she described as the BJP's efforts to break her party through “bulldozer politics.”
Speaking at a dharna in central Kolkata attended by thousands of TMC workers and supporters, Banerjee accused the BJP of using central agencies, political pressure and intimidation tactics to target opposition leaders across the country.
Her remarks come at a time when political tensions between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP have intensified, with both parties trading accusations over governance, corruption investigations and electoral strategies.
“We are not afraid. We will fight or die. We will never surrender before those who want to destroy democracy,” Banerjee told supporters, drawing loud cheers from the crowd.
The protest was organized by the TMC to highlight what the party claims is a systematic attempt by the BJP-led Centre to weaken opposition governments.
What Mamata Meant by ‘Bulldozer Politics’
During her address, Banerjee repeatedly referred to “bulldozer politics,” a phrase increasingly used by opposition parties to criticize aggressive political and administrative actions associated with BJP-ruled states.
According to the TMC chief, the BJP has adopted a strategy of intimidation aimed at silencing political opponents and creating fear among elected representatives.
Banerjee alleged that opposition leaders across India are facing pressure through investigative agencies and legal actions while BJP leaders accused of wrongdoing are allegedly being shielded.
“The BJP believes it can run the country by fear. They think they can bulldoze institutions and democratic voices. Bengal will never accept that,” she said.
Her comments were aimed at mobilizing party workers ahead of future political contests and reinforcing the TMC’s position as the principal challenger to the BJP in West Bengal.
Political Context Behind the Protest
The latest confrontation comes amid ongoing friction between the Centre and the West Bengal government on several issues, including federal funding, administrative autonomy and law-and-order concerns.
Relations between the TMC and BJP have remained strained since the fiercely contested West Bengal Assembly election of 2021, in which the Trinamool Congress secured a decisive victory despite an intensive BJP campaign.
Since then, both sides have frequently accused each other of political vendetta.
The BJP has alleged widespread corruption involving several state-level schemes and has demanded greater accountability from the state government.
The TMC, meanwhile, maintains that central agencies are being selectively deployed against opposition leaders while similar allegations involving BJP figures are ignored.
Political observers believe the latest protest reflects the beginning of a renewed political mobilisation campaign by the TMC.
Crowd Mobilisation and Party Strategy
Senior TMC leaders, ministers and legislators were present at the protest venue.
Party workers carrying TMC flags gathered in large numbers from different districts of West Bengal, including North Bengal, South Bengal and the industrial belt of Purba Medinipur.
Leaders used the platform to highlight what they described as threats to federalism and democratic institutions.
Several speakers accused the BJP of attempting to engineer defections and weaken regional parties through political pressure.
A senior TMC leader present at the event said the party intends to take the campaign beyond Kolkata and organize district-level protests in the coming weeks.
“This is not only about Bengal. It is about protecting democracy and constitutional values,” the leader said.
BJP Hits Back
The BJP quickly responded to Banerjee's allegations, dismissing them as politically motivated.
State BJP leaders argued that corruption investigations and legal proceedings should not be portrayed as political attacks.
According to BJP representatives, the ruling TMC is attempting to divert attention from governance issues and allegations involving several of its leaders.
A BJP spokesperson said that law enforcement agencies are acting independently and that individuals facing investigations must cooperate with legal processes.
The party also accused Banerjee of using inflammatory rhetoric to consolidate her political base.
Why the Development Matters for West Bengal
For West Bengal, the confrontation carries significance beyond routine political sparring.
The TMC remains the dominant political force in the state, while the BJP continues to be its primary challenger.
Every major exchange between the two parties shapes public discourse and influences future electoral strategies.
Political analysts note that Banerjee's speech was designed not only to attack the BJP but also to energize grassroots workers.
“The message is aimed at reinforcing party unity and preventing organisational drift. Strong language often serves as a rallying point for cadre-based parties,” said Kolkata-based political analyst Anirban Chatterjee.
The use of emotionally charged phrases such as “fight or die” reflects the increasingly combative nature of Indian politics, where symbolic messaging often resonates strongly with party supporters.
Public Reactions Across Bengal
The speech triggered intense reactions on social media platforms, where supporters and critics debated Banerjee's remarks.
TMC supporters praised the Chief Minister for taking a firm stand against what they perceive as central interference in state affairs.
BJP supporters, however, accused her of attempting to politicise ongoing investigations and evade accountability.
In districts such as Purba Medinipur, including Haldia, the debate quickly became a talking point among local political workers, reflecting the continuing influence of state-level politics on regional discourse.
What Happens Next?
The political confrontation is unlikely to subside anytime soon.
With major political battles on the horizon, both the TMC and BJP are expected to intensify their campaigns across West Bengal.
Banerjee's latest remarks indicate that the Trinamool Congress intends to frame the coming political contest as a fight to protect democratic institutions and state autonomy.
The BJP, meanwhile, is expected to continue attacking the TMC over governance and corruption-related issues.
As the rhetoric escalates, West Bengal appears set for another prolonged phase of political mobilisation, with both parties preparing for a high-stakes contest that could shape the state's political landscape in the years ahead.
