Birbhum: Bristi Mukherjee, the niece of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, was found hanging at her residence in West Bengal's Birbhum district on Tuesday, police said.
The 28-year-old was found inside a room on the second floor of her family home in Kusumba village in the Rampurhat area. Police reached the residence after being informed and recovered the body.
Police launch investigation
The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, while police have begun an investigation into the death.
Officials said the exact circumstances leading to Bristi Mukherjee's death are yet to be established. The findings of the post-mortem examination and other procedural inquiries are expected to provide further clarity.
Family connection to Mamata Banerjee
Bristi Mukherjee was the daughter of Nihar Mukherjee, who is reported to be a distant or maternal cousin of Mamata Banerjee and a regional Trinamool Congress leader.
Reports of personal and professional difficulties
According to reports, Bristi had previously worked as a non-teaching staff member at a school in Bolpur. Her appointment was among those affected by court proceedings related to the West Bengal school recruitment case.
Some reports also said that she had been undergoing treatment for depression and that divorce proceedings involving her marriage were underway. However, police have not officially linked these circumstances to her death, and the cause of death remains under investigation.
Investigation continues
The incident has caused concern in political and local circles in West Bengal.
Police are continuing their inquiry and are expected to examine all relevant circumstances surrounding the death.
Authorities have urged caution against speculation until the post-mortem report and investigation provide a clearer picture of what happened.
Further details are awaited.
