New Delhi: For three days, investigators found themselves at a dead end.

A rape case with no eyewitnesses, no immediate suspects and few actionable clues had left police struggling for a breakthrough. As the investigation appeared to be stalling, an unlikely hero emerged — a police sniffer dog named Mary.

According to officials, Mary was brought to the crime scene as part of efforts to identify any overlooked leads. Trained in scent tracking, the canine was given an article believed to be connected to the incident before being allowed to pick up a trail from the location.
