MLC Poll Debacle Triggers Fresh War of Words Between BJP and Shiv Sena in Maharashtra
The Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) election results have triggered a fresh political confrontation within the ruling Mahayuti alliance, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena trading accusations over the disappointing outcome. The alliance secured only two of the five seats contested, while the opposition won the remaining three. BJP leaders accused the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena of undermining alliance candidates, while Sena leaders blamed poor candidate selection and a lack of coordination. MLC Election Results Trigger Fresh Mahayuti Rift
The disappointing results of the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections have exposed fresh cracks within the ruling Mahayuti alliance, as the BJP and Shiv Sena publicly blamed each other for the setback.
The ruling coalition won just two of the five seats in the teachers' and graduates' constituencies, while opposition parties secured the remaining three. The results have raised questions about coordination among alliance partners and the ruling coalition's ability to maintain unity ahead of future electoral contests.
The BJP has accused its ally, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, of failing to support official candidates and allegedly helping rival candidates in certain constituencies. The Sena, however, has rejected the allegations, arguing that the BJP must examine its candidate selection and its relationship with party workers and voters.
BJP Accuses Shiv Sena of Sabotaging Alliance Candidates
BJP leaders have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Sena's role during the elections. BJP spokesperson Navnath Ban alleged that certain Sena leaders openly campaigned against alliance candidates, weakening the Mahayuti's chances of winning more seats.
The BJP also pointed to the activities of Sena leaders Ravindra Dhangekar and Abdul Sattar, alleging that their actions contributed to defeats in Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, respectively.
BJP leaders argued that the alliance had sufficient numbers to perform better and accused the Sena of prioritising its own political interests over coalition commitments. Some BJP leaders have also called for disciplinary action against those accused of working against official alliance candidates.
Shiv Sena Rejects Allegations and Questions BJP's Strategy
The Shiv Sena has strongly contested the BJP's accusations, insisting that the election results cannot be attributed solely to the actions of its leaders.
Sena spokesperson Anand Paranjpe argued that the BJP should examine its candidate selection and internal coordination instead of blaming its allies. He suggested that selecting candidates who lacked sufficient support among party workers may have contributed to the disappointing performance.
The Sena also maintained that the Mahayuti partners needed better communication and cooperation to prevent similar setbacks in future elections.
Eknath Shinde defended his party's conduct, stating that the Shiv Sena had respected the principles of alliance politics. Sena leaders have argued that the public exchange of accusations could damage the coalition's credibility and weaken its prospects in future contests.
Eknath Shinde's Chief Ministerial Role Returns to the Spotlight
The controversy has also revived discussions about leadership within Maharashtra's ruling alliance.
Ravindra Dhangekar, a Shiv Sena leader, argued that the election results reflected public dissatisfaction with the government and suggested that Eknath Shinde should return as chief minister.
The remarks triggered a sharp response from BJP leaders, who defended Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and criticised attempts to reopen the leadership question.
The disagreement has added another dimension to the dispute, which began with the MLC election results but has expanded into questions about political influence, leadership and the balance of power within the Mahayuti alliance.
Opposition Gains From Ruling Alliance's Internal Conflict
The Mahayuti's disappointing performance has provided an opportunity for opposition parties to criticise the ruling coalition.
The Congress and other opposition parties have questioned the government's performance and highlighted the apparent lack of unity among its constituent parties. The defeat in Nagpur's graduates' constituency was particularly significant for the BJP, given the party's longstanding political strength in the region.
The opposition's gains in the elections have also prompted discussions about voter dissatisfaction and the challenges facing the ruling alliance in constituencies involving teachers and graduates. However, the results alone do not establish a single reason for the coalition's losses.
Mahayuti Faces Challenge to Restore Unity
The public confrontation between the BJP and Shiv Sena has highlighted the difficulties of maintaining coordination within a multi-party ruling alliance.
Both parties now face pressure to resolve their differences, address concerns over candidate selection and establish clearer expectations for cooperation during future elections.
The MLC poll setback may serve as a warning for the Mahayuti leadership as it prepares for upcoming political challenges. Whether the alliance can overcome its internal disagreements will depend on the willingness of its leaders to prioritise collective interests over individual party rivalries.
