At least six people were killed and four others seriously injured after a speeding passenger bus collided with an autorickshaw in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Friday morning. The crash occurred near Digapahandi on a busy state highway, triggering panic among local residents and raising fresh concerns over reckless driving and road safety enforcement in eastern India.

Six Dead, Four Injured in Ganjam Road Horror
A devastating road accident in Odisha’s Ganjam district claimed six lives on Friday after a speeding passenger bus rammed into an autorickshaw carrying multiple passengers near Digapahandi. Four others sustained critical injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital as rescue teams battled chaos at the accident site.
Police said the collision took place early in the morning on a crowded stretch connecting Berhampur and interior areas of Ganjam district. According to preliminary findings, the private bus was travelling at high speed when it lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle before crashing head-on into the autorickshaw.
The impact was so severe that the three-wheeler was crushed almost entirely beneath the front section of the bus.
Locals who heard the loud crash rushed to the spot and began rescue efforts even before emergency services arrived. Several victims were trapped inside the mangled autorickshaw for nearly half an hour.
“We heard screams immediately after the collision. The auto was completely destroyed,” said a local shopkeeper who witnessed the accident. “People used iron rods and tools to pull passengers out.”
Victims Included Daily Wage Workers
Police officials said most of the victims were local residents travelling for work and personal errands. The identities of all the deceased had not been officially released by Friday afternoon, though authorities confirmed that both men and women were among those killed.
The injured were first taken to Digapahandi Community Health Centre before some were shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur due to the seriousness of their injuries.
Doctors said at least two passengers remained in critical condition.
Bus Driver Detained
The bus driver reportedly attempted to flee the scene after the crash but was later detained by police. Officials said a case had been registered under charges related to rash and negligent driving causing death.
Senior police officers reached the spot to supervise the investigation and clear traffic congestion that stretched for several kilometres.
“We are examining CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts,” a police official said. “Initial evidence suggests overspeeding may have caused the accident.”
Authorities also began checking whether the bus operator had valid permits, fitness certificates and whether the driver had exceeded permissible duty hours.
Recurring Road Safety Problem
The accident has once again exposed the dangerous condition of road transport enforcement in many parts of eastern India, where overcrowded passenger vehicles, speeding buses and poor highway discipline continue to claim lives.
Odisha recorded thousands of road accident deaths last year, according to official transport department figures. National highways and state highways passing through districts like Ganjam remain particularly accident-prone due to heavy commercial traffic and limited enforcement in semi-urban stretches.
Road safety experts say autorickshaws are especially vulnerable in high-speed collisions because of weak structural protection.
“Three-wheelers offer almost no crash resistance against heavy vehicles,” said transport analyst Prabir Mishra. “Even a moderate-speed impact can become fatal.”
The latest tragedy has triggered comparisons with similar accidents reported in neighbouring West Bengal in recent months, where speeding buses and trucks have repeatedly collided with smaller passenger vehicles.
Public Anger Over Reckless Driving
Residents in the area staged brief protests after the accident, demanding stricter action against reckless bus drivers operating on the route. Some locals alleged that private buses frequently violate speed limits to maximise passenger trips during peak morning hours.
“There are traffic checks only occasionally,” said a resident of Digapahandi. “Drivers know they can overspeed without consequences most of the time.”
The incident also sparked strong reactions on social media, where users criticised weak road safety enforcement and poor emergency response infrastructure in rural districts.
Many demanded installation of speed-monitoring cameras and stricter penalties for repeat offenders.
Political Leaders Express Condolences
Odisha Chief Minister expressed grief over the deaths and announced financial assistance for the families of the victims. Local administration officials were instructed to ensure immediate medical care for the injured.
Several opposition leaders also criticised the state’s transport enforcement system, accusing authorities of failing to control dangerous private bus operations despite repeated accidents.
Road safety has increasingly become a politically sensitive issue across India, with fatal highway crashes frequently drawing public outrage and calls for accountability.
Impact Beyond Odisha
The accident has resonated strongly across eastern India because Ganjam district serves as a major transit region for labour movement between Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and parts of West Bengal.
Many families in coastal Bengal, including areas connected to Haldia’s industrial belt, have relatives working in Odisha’s transport, construction and fishing sectors. Regional highway safety therefore remains a shared concern across state borders.
Transport experts warn that unless stricter monitoring systems are introduced, similar tragedies will continue.
India remains among the countries with the highest number of road accident deaths globally. Overspeeding alone accounts for a major share of fatal crashes every year, according to central government data.
Investigation Underway
Police have sent the damaged vehicles for mechanical inspection while forensic teams documented the crash site. Authorities are also reviewing whether overloading contributed to the severity of the casualties.
Traffic movement in the area returned to normal several hours later after cranes removed the wreckage from the highway.
Officials said a detailed investigation report would be submitted to the state transport department in the coming days.
For families waiting outside hospitals and mortuaries on Friday, however, the questions about enforcement and accountability came too late.
Another ordinary morning journey had ended in catastrophe.
