PM Modi to Lead International Yoga Day Celebrations in Kolkata Amid Rain Forecast

Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lead International Yoga Day celebrations in Kolkata on Saturday, with the city preparing to host one of the country's flagship events marking the annual observance.

Thousands of yoga enthusiasts, students, fitness advocates and government officials are expected to participate in the programme, which forms part of nationwide celebrations promoting the benefits of yoga for physical and mental well-being.

The event comes as weather forecasts indicate the possibility of rainfall in Kolkata and surrounding areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted cloudy conditions and intermittent showers across parts of southern West Bengal due to prevailing monsoon activity, raising concerns about outdoor arrangements.

Despite the weather forecast, officials have expressed confidence that preparations are in place to ensure the programme proceeds smoothly. Authorities have reportedly reviewed contingency measures, including alternate arrangements should rainfall affect outdoor activities.

International Yoga Day, observed annually on June 21, was established by the United Nations in 2014 following a proposal introduced by India. Since then, the event has evolved into a global movement, with millions of participants taking part in yoga sessions across countries every year.

Prime Minister Modi has been one of the strongest advocates of the initiative and has regularly led Yoga Day celebrations from different locations across India. His participation has become a central feature of the annual event, drawing significant public attention and encouraging wider engagement with yoga practices.

This year's celebrations are expected to focus on the role of yoga in promoting holistic health, stress management and overall wellness. Organizers have planned mass demonstrations of various yoga asanas and breathing exercises, in line with the Common Yoga Protocol followed during official Yoga Day programmes.

Security arrangements have been strengthened around the venue ahead of the Prime Minister's visit. Local administration, police personnel and event organizers have coordinated efforts to manage crowd movement and ensure smooth conduct of the programme.

The possibility of rain has added an element of uncertainty, but officials remain optimistic that weather conditions will not significantly disrupt the celebrations. Participants have also been advised to follow instructions issued by organizers regarding venue access and event logistics.

The choice of Kolkata as the venue for the Prime Minister-led programme underscores the growing prominence of Yoga Day celebrations across different regions of the country. Large-scale events are also expected to take place simultaneously in several cities and towns nationwide.

As India prepares to mark another International Yoga Day, attention will be on Kolkata, where the Prime Minister is expected to lead the celebrations despite the looming threat of monsoon showers.
