Rajeev Shukla Questions Timing of Rubio’s India Visit
Senior Congress leader Rajeev Shukla on Saturday questioned the timing of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to India amid the ongoing Iran war, suggesting that the United States could be looking for diplomatic assistance from New Delhi.
Speaking against the backdrop of rising tensions in West Asia, Shukla remarked that Washington’s sudden diplomatic outreach may indicate that the US is seeking India’s support in handling the rapidly evolving regional crisis.
His remarks come as Rubio began a high-profile visit to India focused on strengthening bilateral relations, energy cooperation, strategic partnerships, and Indo-Pacific security discussions.
Rubio’s Visit Comes During Intensifying Iran Conflict
Rubio’s India visit has drawn international attention due to its timing. The Middle East continues to witness instability following the Iran conflict, disruptions in global oil supply chains, and growing concerns over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to reports, the United States is trying to strengthen energy cooperation with India as supply disruptions linked to the Iran war impact global markets.
India, heavily dependent on imported energy, has also been carefully balancing its diplomatic relations with both the United States and Iran during the crisis. Analysts believe New Delhi’s neutral approach and growing global influence make it a key player in regional diplomacy.
Shukla Hints at Strategic Importance of India
Rajeev Shukla suggested that India’s geopolitical importance has significantly increased due to the current global situation. He implied that the US administration may be looking toward India for support in maintaining regional stability and diplomatic communication channels.
The Congress leader has previously criticized former US President Donald Trump over escalating global conflicts, including tensions involving Iran.
Political observers say India’s position remains crucial because of its strategic ties with multiple global powers, including the US, Iran, Russia, and Gulf nations.
Focus on Energy, Trade and Security
During his ongoing visit, Rubio is expected to hold discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on issues ranging from energy security to trade and defense cooperation.
Reports indicate that energy diversification has become a major agenda item, especially as global oil prices remain volatile due to the Iran conflict. The US has reportedly been encouraging India to increase imports of American energy resources.
The visit also includes preparations for upcoming Quad-related discussions involving India, the United States, Japan, and Australia.
India Maintaining a Balanced Diplomatic Stand
India has so far maintained a cautious and balanced diplomatic approach regarding the Iran conflict. New Delhi has repeatedly emphasized dialogue, regional stability, and uninterrupted energy supply routes.
Recent reports suggest India has also engaged in humanitarian outreach and diplomatic coordination related to the conflict while avoiding direct alignment with either side.
Experts believe this balanced foreign policy allows India to maintain strategic autonomy while protecting its economic and security interests.
Growing Political Debate
Shukla’s remarks have triggered fresh political debate over India-US relations and New Delhi’s evolving role in global diplomacy. While the ruling establishment has highlighted stronger strategic cooperation with Washington, opposition leaders continue to question the broader geopolitical implications of such engagements.
Rubio’s visit is expected to remain closely watched as global attention stays focused on the Iran crisis and shifting international alliances.
