Rajya Sabha adjourned as Kharge attacks Centre over alleged suppression of CJP protest

The Rajya Sabha witnessed another stormy session on Monday as Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Centre of suppressing the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP)-led protest in Delhi, triggering noisy scenes that eventually led to the House being adjourned.

Kharge raised concerns over the police action against protesters supporting climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, alleging that the government was curbing the democratic right to peaceful protest. Treasury bench members objected to the remarks, resulting in a heated exchange inside the Upper House.

Kharge questions police action

Speaking during the proceedings, Kharge criticised the government's handling of the protests, alleging that demonstrators were prevented from exercising their constitutional right to assemble peacefully.

He also referred to reports of detentions and police action during the CJP's 'Chalo Sansad' march, urging the government to clarify the circumstances under which protesters were stopped.

The Congress president demanded that the Centre respond to concerns raised by Opposition parties regarding the handling of the demonstrations.

Treasury benches hit back

Members of the ruling alliance rejected the Opposition's allegations, maintaining that security arrangements in Delhi were necessary to ensure law and order and protect sensitive areas around Parliament.

Government representatives argued that police acted within the framework of the law and that restrictions were imposed only to prevent any breach of peace.

The sharp exchange between the two sides soon escalated into loud protests inside the House.

Proceedings adjourned

As members from both sides continued raising slogans, the Chair repeatedly appealed for order and urged lawmakers to return to the day's listed business.

With disruptions continuing, the proceedings were adjourned, adding to the series of interruptions that have affected the ongoing Monsoon Session.

Repeated adjournments have slowed legislative business, with several scheduled discussions and bills yet to be taken up.

Political standoff intensifies

The confrontation in Parliament comes amid a broader political row over the removal of Sonam Wangchuk from his hunger strike at Jantar Mantar and the subsequent protests in the national capital.

Opposition parties have accused the Centre of suppressing dissent, while the government has defended the police action, saying it was undertaken to maintain public order and ensure the activist received medical attention.

The issue is expected to remain a flashpoint in Parliament as both sides continue to trade accusations over the handling of the protests.
