Ram Rahim Out on Parole Again, Spent 406 Days Outside Jail
Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has once again walked out of jail on parole, reigniting political and legal debate over repeated temporary releases granted to the controversial self-styled godman. Official data shows the jailed preacher has already spent 406 days outside prison since his 2017 conviction in rape and murder-related cases. The latest parole has triggered criticism from opposition leaders, activists, and former law officers, who question whether influential convicts are receiving preferential treatment under the legal system.

Ram Rahim Returns to Headlines After Fresh Parole Release
Convicted Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is once again at the centre of a political and legal storm after being granted another parole from Sunaria jail in Haryana.
With this latest release, the controversial preacher has now spent a total of 406 days outside prison since being convicted in 2017. The figure has renewed public scrutiny over how frequently the self-styled spiritual leader has received temporary relief despite being convicted in serious criminal cases, including rape and murder conspiracy.
Ram Rahim was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a special CBI court in 2017 for raping two female disciples inside the Dera headquarters in Sirsa. Later, he was also convicted in the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati, who had exposed allegations against the sect leader.
The latest parole, granted by Haryana authorities, comes months after previous temporary releases that had already drawn criticism from opposition parties and victims’ rights groups.
Questions Raised Over Repeated Paroles
Legal experts and political observers say the controversy is no longer only about one parole order. The larger issue, they argue, is the frequency and timing of the releases.
Since his imprisonment, Ram Rahim has repeatedly secured parole or furlough on grounds ranging from family visits to agricultural work and spiritual activities. Critics claim the timing of several paroles coincided with politically sensitive periods, including elections in Haryana and Punjab.
Former senior police officer and legal commentator R.K. Sharma said the growing number of paroles has created “a perception problem” for the justice system.
“Ordinary prisoners rarely receive such frequent relief. The state government must ensure transparency in every parole order,” Sharma said.
Officials from the Haryana prison department maintain that all releases were granted within legal provisions available under prison rules.
Under Indian prison laws, parole is considered a temporary release granted under specific humanitarian or administrative grounds, while furlough is treated as a reward for good conduct. Authorities insist Ram Rahim’s applications were processed according to these rules.
Political Heat Intensifies
The issue has quickly become political ammunition.
Opposition parties have accused the ruling establishment in Haryana of extending special treatment to the Dera chief because of the sect’s influence over voters in northern India. Dera Sacha Sauda commands a sizeable following in Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and parts of Uttar Pradesh.
Congress leaders questioned why a convict serving time in high-profile rape and murder cases continues to receive repeated relief.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has denied any political interference. Party leaders say parole decisions are administrative matters governed by law and prison manuals.
Political analysts believe the controversy resonates strongly because Ram Rahim remains influential among lakhs of followers despite his conviction. Videos and public appearances linked to the Dera chief often trend online within hours, reflecting his continued social reach.
Victims’ Families Express Anger
Families linked to the original criminal cases have also reacted sharply.
Relatives of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati, who was murdered in 2002 after exposing allegations against the Dera leadership, said repeated paroles weaken public faith in justice.
Human rights activists echoed similar concerns, arguing that influential convicts appear to enjoy advantages unavailable to ordinary inmates.
Women’s rights campaigner Kavita Krishnan said the repeated releases send “a deeply troubling signal” in cases involving sexual violence.
“The message should be accountability and punishment, not repeated public reappearances of convicted offenders,” she said.
Supporters Defend the Dera Chief
Inside the Dera Sacha Sauda camp, however, the atmosphere remains celebratory.
Followers gathered at several locations in Haryana and Punjab after news of the parole emerged. Social media pages associated with supporters shared videos praising the sect leader and calling the release “lawful and justified.”
The Dera has consistently maintained that Ram Rahim was falsely implicated and targeted due to his popularity and social influence.
Even after his conviction, the organisation continues to run charitable and welfare activities, including blood donation drives, sanitation campaigns, and disaster relief work.
Political experts say this enduring support base partly explains why every parole granted to the Dera chief turns into a national headline.
What the Law Says About Parole
Legal scholars point out that parole itself is not illegal or extraordinary. Indian prison systems allow temporary release under certain conditions, especially for prisoners who demonstrate good conduct.
However, the debate intensifies when the convict involved is serving sentences in highly sensitive cases.
Senior advocate Meenakshi Arora said public outrage often stems from unequal perception.
“The law permits parole. The real question is consistency. Are the same standards applied to every prisoner across India?” she asked.
Several activists are now demanding that parole records of high-profile convicts be made publicly accessible to improve transparency.
A Continuing Flashpoint
The Ram Rahim case has remained politically explosive for nearly a decade.
Violence erupted in parts of Haryana in 2017 after his conviction, leaving dozens dead and hundreds injured. Security agencies continue to monitor Dera-related mobilisations carefully whenever the sect chief receives temporary release.
Authorities this time have imposed restrictions on public gatherings linked to his parole period. Officials said law and order arrangements have been strengthened in sensitive districts.
Still, the larger debate shows no signs of fading.
For supporters, Ram Rahim remains a spiritual leader with a massive social following. For critics, his repeated exits from prison represent a troubling example of privilege inside the criminal justice system.
As the latest parole period begins, attention is once again fixed on whether India’s prison and parole framework treats all convicts equally — or whether influence and political relevance continue to shape outcomes behind the scenes.
