PM Modi Promised ‘Achhe Din’ but Delivered Hard Times, Says Siddaramaiah

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP-led central government, claiming that the promise of “Achhe Din” made during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections had instead resulted in economic hardship for ordinary Indians. (m.economictimes.com)

Addressing party workers and media representatives, Siddaramaiah accused the Centre of failing to address key public concerns such as rising prices, unemployment, and farmer distress. He said the BJP government had repeatedly made promises of economic prosperity but the reality on the ground reflected increasing struggles for middle-class families, labourers, and farmers. “The Prime Minister promised ‘Achhe Din’ for every Indian. But people are facing difficult times due to inflation, lack of jobs, and rising living costs,” Siddaramaiah reportedly said while attacking the BJP’s economic policies.

The Karnataka Chief Minister further alleged that the central government’s policies had widened economic inequality and increased financial pressure on weaker sections of society. He pointed to issues such as fuel price hikes, GST-related concerns raised by small businesses, and challenges faced by rural households as examples of public dissatisfaction.

Siddaramaiah also highlighted welfare schemes introduced by the Karnataka government under the Congress administration, claiming that his government was focused on directly supporting poor and middle-income families through social welfare guarantees. (deccanherald.com)

The BJP strongly reacted to the remarks, accusing Siddaramaiah of making politically motivated statements to divert attention from internal issues within the Karnataka government. BJP leaders argued that India has witnessed major infrastructure growth, digital expansion, and economic reforms under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.

Several BJP spokespersons also highlighted central welfare schemes, including housing, free ration distribution, and direct benefit transfers, claiming that these initiatives had improved the lives of millions across the country. (bjp.org)

The exchange of political attacks comes at a time when both the Congress and BJP are intensifying preparations for upcoming elections in several states. Economic issues, unemployment, inflation, and welfare politics are expected to remain central themes in political campaigns over the next few years.

Political analysts believe Siddaramaiah’s comments are part of the Congress party’s broader strategy to target the BJP on bread-and-butter issues affecting daily life. The Congress has repeatedly accused the Centre of prioritising publicity over economic relief measures for common citizens.

The phrase “Achhe Din,” which became one of the BJP’s most recognisable campaign slogans during the 2014 general elections, continues to be frequently used by opposition parties while criticising the Modi government’s performance on economic indicators.

As political rhetoric continues to escalate, the latest remarks from Siddaramaiah are likely to intensify the ongoing war of words between the Congress and the BJP ahead of future electoral contests.
