Surjewala Steps In as Karnataka Congress Battles Discontent After Cabinet Expansion

Bengaluru: The Congress high command has moved swiftly to contain growing resentment within its Karnataka unit after the recent cabinet expansion, with senior party leader and state in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala holding consultations with legislators and party leaders.

The cabinet reshuffle has triggered disappointment among several Congress MLAs who were expecting ministerial positions but were left out of the final list. The dissatisfaction has prompted the party leadership to intervene to prevent internal differences from escalating.

Surjewala arrived in Bengaluru to meet legislators, hear their concerns and convey the Congress leadership's message of unity. Party sources said the exercise is aimed at reassuring disgruntled MLAs that their contributions will be recognised and that organisational responsibilities and future opportunities will be considered.

Addressing the media, Surjewala said the Congress remains united and dismissed speculation of any major internal crisis. He emphasised that cabinet formation is a continuous political process and urged party leaders and workers to focus on governance and fulfilling the promises made to the people of Karnataka.

The Congress leadership has maintained that the cabinet expansion was carried out after careful consideration of regional representation, social balance, administrative experience and governance priorities. However, some legislators have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over being excluded despite their expectations.

Political observers note that cabinet expansions often lead to internal competition within ruling parties, especially in states where a large number of senior legislators aspire to ministerial positions. Managing these expectations is considered crucial for maintaining party unity and ensuring smooth governance.

The Siddaramaiah-led government continues to enjoy a comfortable majority in the Karnataka Assembly, and the Congress leadership has reiterated that internal discussions will be resolved through dialogue rather than public confrontation.
