Tamil Nadu Assembly Sees ‘Nagadosham’ vs ‘Jaladosham’ Banter as Ministers Debate Snakebite Incidents

Chennai: A discussion on snakebite incidents in the Tamil Nadu Assembly took an unexpected and humorous turn on Wednesday, September 2, when former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam referred to the traditional belief of ‘Nagadosham’ or a serpent-related curse.

Panneerselvam raised the issue while speaking about a series of snakebite incidents reported from different constituencies. In a light-hearted intervention, he suggested that some areas could be facing Nagadosham because of displeased serpents and asked whether the government could consider organising temple rituals to address the supposed problem.

Health Minister rejects ‘Nagadosham’ explanation

Health Minister K G Arunraj dismissed the astrological explanation and made it clear that the government would rely on medical science rather than religious or planetary remedies to deal with snakebite cases.

Turning the reference into a wordplay, Arunraj said the widespread ailment being dealt with by the state was ‘Jaladosham’, or the common cold, rather than Nagadosham. His response triggered laughter in the House.

The exchange also highlighted the broader ideological divide over the role of rationalism and traditional beliefs in public policy. Arunraj stressed that the administration follows a scientific approach when dealing with public-health issues.

Snakebite issue sparks political humour

The discussion began with concerns over snakebite incidents in several parts of Tamil Nadu. Rather than turning into a prolonged confrontation, the exchange briefly lightened the atmosphere inside the House.

Other members, including Public Works Minister Aadhav Arjuna and Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, also joined the humorous exchange. Udhayanidhi reportedly quipped that Panneerselvam was actually referring to Jaladosham, adding another layer to the wordplay.
