Tamil Nadu unveils plans for Olympic City, new ₹1,200-crore Secretariat complex

Chennai: Tamil Nadu has announced an ambitious infrastructure expansion covering both sports and administration, with plans for a world-class Olympic City and a new integrated Secretariat and Legislative Assembly complex in Chennai.

The announcements were made in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday, with the government presenting the projects as part of a long-term vision to strengthen the state's sporting ecosystem and modernise its administrative infrastructure.

Olympic City to promote world-class sports training

The proposed Tamil Nadu Olympic City will feature international-standard sporting infrastructure, training facilities and other support systems aimed at developing athletes capable of competing at the highest level.

The project is intended to provide a comprehensive ecosystem for athlete development, including high-performance training and facilities designed around Olympic disciplines. The broader objective is to strengthen Tamil Nadu's position as a major sporting hub and help produce more medal-winning athletes.

The state has already been pursuing discipline-specific Centres of Excellence and other sports infrastructure as part of its preparations for future national and international competitions.

New Secretariat and Assembly complex planned

Alongside the sports initiative, the government announced plans for a new integrated Secretariat and Legislative Assembly complex in Chennai.

The proposed facility will cover around 20 lakh square feet and is estimated to cost ₹1,200 crore. It is expected to bring key government departments and the Assembly together in a modern administrative complex.

The proposed building is expected to incorporate modern fire-safety systems, accessibility features for persons with disabilities and green-building measures.

Designed for long-term administrative needs

The government has described the new complex as an infrastructure project intended to meet Tamil Nadu's administrative requirements for decades to come.

The proposal also envisages a more integrated working environment for government departments and the legislature, potentially improving coordination and administrative efficiency.

The existing Fort St George complex, which has historical significance, is expected to retain its heritage character even as the new facility becomes the state's modern administrative hub.

Motor Sports City also on the agenda

The state's sporting ambitions extend beyond Olympic disciplines. Tamil Nadu has also announced plans for a dedicated Motor Sports City, with international-standard racing infrastructure and facilities for training young talent.

The proposed project is intended to support motorsport events and training while boosting sports tourism and creating opportunities connected to the automotive and motorsport industries.

A broader vision for Chennai

Together, the Olympic City, Motor Sports City and new Secretariat project represent a major infrastructure push aimed at reshaping Chennai's sporting and administrative landscape.

The sports projects are expected to strengthen the state's athlete-development pipeline, while the new Secretariat is being positioned as a long-term investment in governance infrastructure.

The next stage will involve detailed planning, site selection, approvals and implementation timelines for the proposed projects.
