TMC faces fresh embarrassment after MP accuses colleague of misogynistic behaviour

A fresh controversy has erupted inside the All India Trinamool Congress after senior MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar accused fellow parliamentarian Kalyan Banerjee of verbal abuse and misogynistic conduct in a letter addressed to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

The complaint has triggered a political storm in West Bengal at a time when the ruling party is already navigating growing opposition pressure and factional unease ahead of the next electoral cycle.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Dastidar alleged that Banerjee used inappropriate language and displayed behaviour unbecoming of a senior parliamentarian during a heated exchange linked to parliamentary proceedings. While the exact contents of the letter have not been officially released in full, references to “misogyny”, “humiliation”, and “verbal intimidation” have surfaced in political circles and media reports.

The development has quickly become one of the most discussed political stories on social media platforms, with opposition parties questioning the internal culture within the TMC.

What triggered the dispute

The controversy reportedly stems from disagreements during discussions among party MPs over parliamentary coordination and floor strategy. Tensions within the TMC parliamentary unit have occasionally surfaced in recent months, though most disagreements were previously handled behind closed doors.

Multiple MPs familiar with the functioning of the parliamentary party said tempers flared during a recent interaction in Delhi. Dastidar allegedly felt personally targeted by comments made by Banerjee.

A senior TMC leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the matter had embarrassed the party leadership.

“This should have been resolved internally. Once such allegations reach the Speaker, it naturally becomes a national political issue,” the leader said.

Neither Dastidar nor Banerjee initially made extensive public comments immediately after the reports surfaced. However, political reactions intensified through the day as news channels and digital platforms picked up the story.

Focus shifts to conduct inside Parliament

The complaint has renewed attention on workplace dignity and gender sensitivity in Indian politics. Women parliamentarians across parties have frequently spoken about hostile behaviour and verbal aggression during political confrontations, though formal complaints remain relatively rare.

Legal experts said that once a written complaint reaches the Speaker’s office, it may require preliminary examination even if the dispute is internal to a political party.

Political analyst Soumya Bandyopadhyay said the issue carries wider implications.

“This is not just about one argument between two MPs. Allegations of misogyny inside Parliament carry serious reputational consequences for any party, particularly one that publicly projects women-centric politics,” he said.

The TMC has long highlighted women’s welfare schemes in West Bengal and positioned itself as a party strongly backed by female voters. Any allegation involving misogynistic behaviour within its own ranks could therefore become politically sensitive.

Opposition attacks TMC over internal culture

The opposition BJP lost little time in attacking the ruling party in Bengal.

Several BJP leaders claimed the episode reflected “growing chaos” within the TMC. State BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya questioned whether the party leadership would take disciplinary action.

“If a woman MP from their own party feels compelled to approach the Speaker, it shows the seriousness of the situation,” he said.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also criticised the public fallout, saying the incident exposed “deep internal contradictions” within the ruling party.

However, TMC leaders attempted to downplay the controversy, describing it as an internal disagreement that should not be exaggerated.

A senior party functionary in Kolkata said discussions were underway to prevent the issue from escalating further.

Political significance in West Bengal

The controversy comes at a politically sensitive time in West Bengal, where every internal development within the TMC is closely watched ahead of future Lok Sabha and Assembly battles.

Kalyan Banerjee remains one of the party’s most visible and outspoken MPs in Parliament. Known for his aggressive political style and sharp exchanges with opposition leaders, Banerjee has often drawn headlines for controversial remarks.

Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, meanwhile, is considered an experienced parliamentarian and influential voice within the party’s women leadership structure.

Political observers say the public nature of the dispute indicates deeper stress within sections of the parliamentary leadership.

“This is significant because it is no longer opposition versus TMC. It is now a senior MP publicly accusing another senior MP from the same party,” said Kolkata-based political commentator Arindam Mukherjee.

The row has also become a major talking point across Bengali social media platforms, particularly among younger political audiences debating gender issues and political accountability.

Speaker’s office yet to make formal comment

As of Thursday evening, there was no official public response from the Lok Sabha Speaker’s office regarding the complaint.

Parliamentary affairs experts said the Speaker may choose to seek clarification informally before deciding whether any procedural action is required.

Sources in Delhi indicated that senior TMC leadership may also intervene privately to contain the fallout and avoid prolonged public confrontation.

For the ruling party in West Bengal, the controversy presents a difficult balancing act. Ignoring the allegations could invite criticism from women’s rights groups and political opponents. Acting against a senior MP could expose deeper fractures within the organisation.

Why this story matters beyond Parliament

The dispute has resonated beyond political circles because it touches on broader concerns over gender respect in public institutions. In recent years, conversations around workplace dignity, sexism, and political conduct have become increasingly central in India’s public discourse.

For many observers, the significance of the complaint lies not only in the allegations themselves but also in the fact that a sitting MP chose to formally escalate the matter.

The coming days will likely determine whether the controversy fades through internal reconciliation or develops into a larger political confrontation with national implications.
