Trump Administration’s New Fee Proposal Could Make US Citizenship Costlier; Here’s How It May Impact Indians

Washington DC: The administration of US President Donald Trump has proposed a sharp increase in the fee charged to immigrants applying for US citizenship, a move that could affect thousands of Indians living in the country.

According to a proposal put forward by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the naturalization application fee could rise by $570, taking the total cost to $1,330 for many applicants. The fee increase would apply to Form N-400, the primary application used by green card holders seeking US citizenship.

What Has Been Proposed?

The proposed rule seeks to increase the cost of filing citizenship applications as part of a broader overhaul of immigration-related fees. USCIS has argued that naturalization should not have "low-cost options" and that higher fees would help cover administrative and enforcement costs. The proposal is currently subject to a public comment period and would not take effect immediately.

At present, lawful permanent residents generally become eligible to apply for citizenship after maintaining green card status for about five years, subject to other eligibility requirements.

Why Indians Could Be Hit Hard

Indians represent one of the largest groups applying for US citizenship every year and are second only to a few nationalities in the number of naturalization applications submitted. As a result, any increase in application fees is likely to have a disproportionate impact on the Indian diaspora.

Many Indian immigrants spend years navigating the US immigration system through student visas, H-1B work visas and employment-based green card pathways before becoming eligible for citizenship. The proposed fee hike would add another expense at the final stage of that journey.

Broader Immigration Tightening

The proposal comes amid a series of immigration-related changes under the Trump administration. Recent measures have included increased scrutiny of green card applications, higher immigration-processing fees and stricter review procedures for certain visa categories.

Immigration experts say the higher naturalization fee could discourage some eligible immigrants from applying immediately, especially families facing multiple application costs at the same time. Others may choose to file before any new rule takes effect.

What Happens Next?

The proposal must complete the federal rulemaking process before becoming law. During the public comment period, individuals, advocacy groups and stakeholders can submit feedback. DHS will review those comments before deciding whether to finalize, modify or withdraw the proposal.

For now, the existing fee structure remains in place. However, if the proposal is approved, Indians planning to apply for US citizenship could face substantially higher costs in the coming months.
