UP Minister Accuses CJP of Spreading Disorder; Opposition Says BJP Is Frightened and Making a Major Mistake

Political tensions intensified on October 10 as Uttar Pradesh Minister of State for Minority Welfare Danish Azad Ansari criticised the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest, accusing some individuals of undermining the constitutional framework and creating disorder. Congress leader Aradhana Misra Mona alleged that the BJP was restricting democratic expression, while Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav warned that attempting to stop protesters through the use of power would be a major mistake. Other political voices questioned the legitimacy of the demonstration, citing the matter pending before the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Delhi Police detained around 500 people attempting to reach Jantar Mantar for the proposed protest.

UP Minister Accuses CJP of Spreading Disorder; Opposition Says BJP Is Frightened and Making a Major Mistake

UP Minister Danish Azad Ansari Criticises CJP Protest

Uttar Pradesh Minister of State for Minority Welfare Danish Azad Ansari on Saturday criticised the ongoing protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party, arguing that democratic disagreements should be addressed through constitutional processes and dialogue rather than coercion.

Speaking to reporters in Ballia, Ansari said the country operates under a democratic system and the Constitution. He alleged that certain individuals were deliberately attempting to undermine the constitutional framework and create disorder.

The minister called for public debate to remain within democratic boundaries, emphasising dialogue as a means of resolving disagreements.

Ansari also criticised the Congress, asserting that the party had lost its political relevance and that voters had rejected it. His remarks came amid an intensifying political dispute over the CJP's proposed demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Congress Accuses BJP of Restricting Democratic Expression

Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Aradhana Misra Mona strongly criticised the BJP's response to the planned demonstration, describing the situation as evidence of a government that was frightened by public dissent.

Mona argued that the Constitution gives political parties, organisations and individuals the right to express their views peacefully and democratically. She questioned the need for extensive security arrangements and restrictions affecting public movement.

She also raised concerns about reported disruptions to train and metro services, the cancellation of trains and checks on vehicles at toll plazas. According to her, the deployment of paramilitary personnel in Delhi and the detention of political workers in Uttar Pradesh raised questions about the authorities' handling of the protest.

Mona maintained that the BJP would have to answer for these measures. Her comments reflected the opposition's broader argument that restrictions on demonstrators could undermine the right to peaceful political expression. These were allegations made by the Congress leader and were not, by themselves, an independent determination of the authorities' motives.

Akhilesh Yadav Warns BJP Against Using Force

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav also criticised the government's response, warning that attempts to prevent people from assembling through the use of state power could prove to be a serious political mistake.

In a post on X, Yadav expressed support for the country's youth and suggested that restricting the demonstrators would not necessarily end the movement.

He described Jantar Mantar as more than a physical location, presenting it as a symbol of political awareness and public mobilisation. He also argued that if protesters were stopped at the designated location, demonstrations could emerge elsewhere.

Yadav's remarks underscored the opposition's position that the government should address the concerns behind the protest rather than rely primarily on restrictions and detentions.

The BJP and its representatives, however, have rejected the opposition's characterisation of the situation and defended their criticism of the demonstration and the wider political campaign surrounding it.

RLD Questions the Legitimacy of the Demonstration

Not all political voices supported proceeding with the protest. Rashtriya Lok Dal spokesperson Ankur Saxena argued that the demonstration lacked legitimacy while the matter concerning the Chief Election Commissioner was pending before the Supreme Court.

Saxena said that continuing with a protest at this stage could be interpreted as disrespect for the judiciary. He urged young people to cooperate with the government, adding that the government was sensitive to the issues being raised.

His position offered a contrasting view to that of the Congress and Samajwadi Party, which defended peaceful demonstrations as a democratic right.

The differing responses highlighted the political disagreement over how citizens and political organisations should pursue grievances while a related matter is before the courts. The legal status of the case and any applicable restrictions must be distinguished from the political arguments made by individual leaders.

Minister Narendra Kashyap Alleges Opposition Is Using CJP

Uttar Pradesh Minister Narendra Kashyap accused the Congress, Samajwadi Party and other opposition parties of using the CJP protest to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kashyap expressed confidence that the Central government would take action against the ongoing protest, which he said was causing difficulties for people in Uttar Pradesh and elsewhere.

His remarks reinforced the ruling side's argument that the demonstration was part of a broader political campaign against the BJP-led government. Opposition leaders, meanwhile, maintained that the right to peaceful protest and concerns about electoral processes should not be dismissed as political manoeuvring.

Why Is CJP Protesting?

The CJP called for a demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations concerning voter-list manipulation during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in several states and Union Territories.

The protesters also raised concerns about changes involving Form 6, which is used for voter registration. Their demands placed electoral-roll revisions, voter access and the functioning of election-related institutions at the centre of the political dispute.

The allegations remain contested. Criticism of the revision process and demands for accountability should not be treated as proof that electoral manipulation occurred. The claims and the responses of the relevant authorities need to be assessed against verifiable evidence and the applicable legal process.

The dispute has also drawn attention to the broader question of how concerns about electoral transparency can be raised and examined through institutional channels while allowing peaceful political participation.

Delhi Police Detains Around 500 Protesters

Security arrangements were heightened in New Delhi as demonstrators attempted to reach Jantar Mantar for the proposed CJP protest. According to the PTI report carried by The Economic Times, Delhi Police detained around 500 protesters on Saturday.

Police reportedly detained people at several locations in the New Delhi area, including near Regal Cinema, Minto Bridge and Akashwani Bhawan. Sources cited in the report said drones were being used to monitor the movement of people attempting to reach the protest site.

The detentions became part of the wider political controversy, with opposition leaders questioning the scale of the restrictions and the government defending its position on maintaining order.

The reported number refers to the detentions described in that report; it should not automatically be interpreted as the total number of people detained across all locations or throughout the wider protest period.

Conclusion

The CJP protest has sharpened political differences between the BJP and opposition parties over electoral-roll revisions, the right to demonstrate and the authorities' response to public mobilisation.

Danish Azad Ansari accused some individuals of undermining the constitutional framework and spreading disorder, while Congress leader Aradhana Misra Mona and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticised the restrictions and warned against the use of force to stop protesters. The RLD, meanwhile, questioned the timing and legitimacy of the demonstration because of the matter pending before the Supreme Court.

As the debate continues, the central issues remain the evidence behind the allegations concerning electoral rolls, the legal proceedings involved and the balance between maintaining public order and protecting peaceful democratic expression.
