Dehradun: Uttarakhand Minister Khajan Das has rejected the Congress party's allegations linking the BJP to the controversy surrounding an alleged purification ritual in Haldwani, saying the ruling party had “nothing to do with it.”
The remarks come amid a growing political dispute over claims that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was insulted in connection with the alleged “shuddhikaran” or purification ritual.
Congress leaders have strongly criticised the incident and linked it to a wider debate over caste discrimination and the dignity of Dalit leaders.
However, Khajan Das rejected attempts to connect the controversy directly with the BJP.
Khajan Das rejects Congress allegations
The Uttarakhand minister said the BJP should not be held responsible for the alleged incident.
His remarks were in response to Congress allegations that sought to portray the controversy as reflecting the ideology and approach of the BJP.
Das maintained that the party had no connection with the matter and rejected claims that the alleged purification ritual was politically directed.
The BJP leader's response is part of an escalating political exchange between the Congress and the ruling party over the incident.
Congress raises issue of Kharge's dignity
The Congress has strongly condemned the alleged incident, arguing that it represents an insult not only to Mallikarjun Kharge but also raises broader concerns regarding caste discrimination.
Kharge is one of India's most prominent Dalit political leaders and currently serves as the president of the Indian National Congress.
Congress leaders have accused the BJP and its ideological supporters of promoting attitudes that undermine constitutional values of equality and social justice.
The party has demanded accountability and sought to highlight the issue as part of the broader political debate surrounding caste and discrimination.
What is the Haldwani purification controversy?
The controversy centres around allegations of a “shuddhikaran” or purification ritual reportedly conducted in Haldwani.
The issue became politically sensitive because the alleged ritual was linked by critics to notions of ritual purity and caste-based discrimination.
Opposition leaders have argued that if the ritual was conducted because of the presence or caste identity of a political leader, it would raise serious questions about equality and dignity.
The controversy has consequently developed into a major political issue, with leaders from different parties offering sharply contrasting interpretations.
BJP distances itself from the row
Khajan Das's statement represents a clear attempt by the BJP to distance itself from the incident.
By saying that the BJP had “nothing to do with it,” the minister rejected the Congress's attempt to connect the controversy with the party's ideology.
The BJP has maintained that individual incidents should not automatically be used to make broad allegations against an entire political party.
Party leaders are expected to continue countering the Congress narrative as the controversy remains in the public spotlight.
Political war over caste and social justice
The incident has intensified the political debate surrounding caste, social equality and Dalit dignity.
Political parties frequently take strong positions on such issues because of their deep social and electoral significance.
The Congress has sought to present the Haldwani controversy as evidence of deeper social attitudes, while the BJP has rejected attempts to draw broader political conclusions.
The differing responses demonstrate how incidents involving caste and identity can quickly become major political flashpoints.
Wider implications
The controversy has also renewed attention on constitutional protections against caste discrimination.
The Indian Constitution guarantees equality before the law and prohibits discrimination on grounds including caste.
It also abolished untouchability and established legal protections for historically marginalised communities.
Political leaders across parties have repeatedly emphasised the importance of protecting the dignity and rights of every citizen.
As the Haldwani controversy continues, the focus is likely to remain on the circumstances surrounding the alleged purification ritual and the responses of political leaders.
For now, Khajan Das's remarks have added another layer to the political confrontation, with the BJP firmly rejecting the Congress's attempt to link the party to the alleged incident.
The issue is expected to remain part of the wider debate over caste equality, Dalit dignity, constitutional values and political accountability in Uttarakhand and beyond.
