Who is Erling Haaland's father, and has he represented Norway at the FIFA World Cup?

Erling Haaland's footballing roots trace back to his father, Alf-Inge Haaland, a former Norway international who enjoyed a successful Premier League career. While Alf-Inge represented Norway over three decades, he never had the opportunity to play at a FIFA World Cup, with the national team failing to qualify during much of his international career.

Who is Erling Haaland's father, and has he represented Norway at the FIFA World Cup?

As Erling Haaland continues to establish himself as one of world football's most prolific strikers, interest in his family's footballing background has grown significantly. While the Norway captain has become a global superstar through his exploits for club and country, his father, Alf-Inge Haaland, was also a distinguished footballer with an impressive career at both domestic and international levels.

However, despite representing Norway for several years, Alf-Inge never featured at a FIFA World Cup.

Who is Alf-Inge Haaland?

Alf-Inge Haaland is a former Norwegian professional footballer who played primarily as a midfielder before later establishing himself as a versatile defender. Born on November 23, 1972, he began his professional career with Bryne before moving to England, where he enjoyed a lengthy spell in the Premier League.

During his club career, Alf-Inge represented Nottingham Forest, Leeds United and Manchester City, earning a reputation for his work rate, versatility and consistency. He played under several renowned managers and became a familiar face in English football throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.

His career is also remembered for the infamous rivalry with former Manchester United captain Roy Keane. The feud culminated in a controversial challenge by Keane during the 2001 Manchester derby, an incident that remains one of the Premier League's most discussed moments.

International career with Norway

Alf-Inge earned 34 senior caps for Norway between 1994 and 2001. During that period, Norway enjoyed one of the strongest eras in its footballing history, competing regularly against Europe's top nations.

Despite his contributions, Alf-Inge did not play at a FIFA World Cup.

Norway qualified for the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States and the 1998 tournament in France. However, Alf-Inge was not included in Norway's final squad for either competition.

After 1998, Norway failed to qualify for subsequent World Cups during the remainder of his international career, denying him the opportunity to appear on football's biggest stage.

Following in his father's footsteps

Erling Haaland has built on his father's legacy by becoming Norway's biggest football star of the modern era.

After progressing through the youth ranks at Bryne—the same club where his father began his career—Erling developed into one of Europe's most feared strikers with spells at Red Bull Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City.

Known for his remarkable pace, physicality and clinical finishing, Haaland has broken numerous scoring records at club level and has become Norway's all-time leading goalscorer at a relatively young age.

Chasing a family first

Unlike his father, Erling now has the opportunity to achieve something no Haaland has managed before—represent Norway at a FIFA World Cup.

Norway's recent resurgence, driven by a talented generation featuring Haaland and captain Martin Ødegaard, has renewed hopes of ending the nation's long absence from the tournament.

Should Norway qualify and Haaland feature on football's biggest stage, he would become the first member of his family to play in a FIFA World Cup, adding another chapter to one of Norway's most celebrated footballing stories.

While Alf-Inge's international career ended without a World Cup appearance, his influence on Erling's development is widely acknowledged. Together, the father-son duo have left an enduring mark on Norwegian football, each shaping different generations of the national game.
