22 BRS MLAs Suspended From Telangana Assembly

Twenty-two legislators of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) were suspended from the Telangana Assembly on Wednesday for the remainder of the Monsoon Session after disrupting proceedings and entering the Well of the House.

The suspended legislators include senior BRS leaders KT Rama Rao (KTR) and T Harish Rao. The suspension followed repeated protests by BRS members inside the House, where they raised slogans demanding justice.

BRS Demands Discussion on Police Action

The disruption began shortly after the Assembly met. BRS working president KT Rama Rao moved an adjournment motion seeking a discussion on alleged police high-handedness against BRS women legislators two days earlier.

The party also wanted the House to discuss alleged remarks by some ruling Congress members concerning the health and death of BRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR).

The BRS legislators continued their protest despite repeated appeals from Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu to return to their seats.

Speaker Announces Suspension

After the BRS members refused to leave the Well and continued raising slogans, Legislative Affairs Minister Sridhar Babu moved a motion seeking their suspension.

Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar subsequently announced the suspension of all 22 BRS legislators for the remainder of the Monsoon Session.

The suspended MLAs include KT Rama Rao, T Harish Rao, G Jagadish Reddy, Gangula Kamalakar, P Kaushik Reddy, P Sabita Indra Reddy, Vemula Prashant Reddy, T Srinivas Yadav and several other senior BRS legislators.

BRS Protests Over Women MLAs

The BRS has alleged that its women MLAs were treated improperly by police near the Assembly premises two days earlier.

The party sought to raise the matter on the floor of the House, arguing that the alleged police action required a discussion. The government, however, maintained that the BRS legislators should raise their concerns from their designated seats rather than disrupting proceedings.

Congress Raises ‘Purification’ Row

The Assembly confrontation also came against the backdrop of another controversy involving BRS workers and a protest near KCR's farmhouse at Erravelli.

Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka referred to reports that BRS leaders had carried out a purification ritual by sprinkling turmeric water at the site after Congress workers and Dalit activists held a protest there.

The Congress criticised the alleged act as an insult to Dalits and linked it to the wider political confrontation between the two parties. These claims remain part of the ongoing political dispute.

BRS Has 37 MLAs in 119-Member House

The BRS has an official strength of 37 legislators in the 119-member Telangana Assembly. The suspension of 22 members therefore affects a substantial portion of the party's legislative strength during the remainder of the session.

The action is likely to intensify the political confrontation between the ruling Congress and the Opposition BRS in Telangana.

Telangana Assembly Witnesses Growing Political Tension

The latest suspension is part of a series of heated exchanges between the BRS and Congress during the Monsoon Session.
