A 75-year-old man from Thane died after suffering a heart attack while attending the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on Thursday evening, police said.
The deceased was identified as Gopalakrishna Subbaiya Pillai, a resident of Dosti West County in Thane. According to police, Pillai had travelled to Shivaji Park to attend the protest and reached the venue at around 4.30 pm.
The incident took place around 5 pm when Pillai was approaching Gate No. 6 of Shivaji Park. He reportedly began feeling uneasy and complained of chest pain.
His friend and police personnel deployed at the protest venue immediately came to his aid. A doctor who was present at the site provided him with preliminary medical treatment.
Pillai was subsequently rushed to Sushrusha Hospital in Shivaji Park for further treatment. Despite the efforts to provide medical assistance, he died after suffering a heart attack, according to the police.
The incident occurred as a large number of people had gathered at Shivaji Park for the CJP protest. The demonstration was organised amid the party's campaign against the Election Commission and its concerns over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
The gathering saw the participation of several public figures and protesters. The large crowd had assembled at the venue during the evening when Pillai developed the medical emergency.
Police personnel deployed at the protest responded after he complained of chest pain and helped facilitate his medical treatment and transportation to the hospital.
The death has been reported as a medical emergency occurring during the protest, with police stating that Pillai suffered a heart attack. The incident was separate from the proceedings of the protest itself.
The CJP protest had drawn significant attention in Mumbai, with organisers and supporters raising demands concerning electoral rolls and the Election Commission. The event at Shivaji Park was attended by a large number of people, making security and crowd management a major responsibility for the authorities present at the venue.
Pillai's death came during the gathering and was followed by efforts by people around him and police personnel to provide immediate assistance. A doctor at the site initially attended to him before he was taken to the nearby hospital.
The incident highlights the importance of emergency medical arrangements at large public gatherings, particularly events that attract substantial crowds and include elderly participants. In this case, medical assistance was available at the venue and emergency measures were initiated after Pillai complained of chest pain.
Police said the 75-year-old had arrived at Shivaji Park specifically to attend the CJP protest. Further details about his medical history or any other circumstances surrounding his death were not provided in the available report.
