The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday suspended Maur MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana for alleged “anti-party activities”, shortly after he released an emotional video raising concerns over the shortage of teachers in Punjab government schools.
Maiserkhana highlighted the shortage of teachers in state-run schools, including the government schools attended by his two children. He questioned the situation and accused the Punjab government of failing to address the shortage.
According to an investigation by The Indian Express earlier this year, Maiserkhana was the only MLA among the 117 members of the Punjab Assembly who sent both his children to government schools.
The MLA's video came shortly before the party announced his suspension.
The suspension order was issued by AAP state general secretary Harchand Singh Barsat. The order stated that Maiserkhana had allegedly been involved in “anti-party activities and indiscipline”.
The order announced the suspension of his primary membership of the party with immediate effect.
The development has drawn attention because Maiserkhana's criticism concerned government schools, including schools attended by his own children. His decision to publicly raise the issue of teacher shortages came shortly before the disciplinary action by his party.
Maiserkhana represents the Maur constituency in the Punjab Legislative Assembly. The suspension means that his position within the AAP has now come under disciplinary action, while he continues to be the elected MLA from the constituency.
