Sagardighi MLA Bayron Biswas sustained burn injuries after a fire broke out at his residence in Murshidabad on Saturday morning. The Democratic Trinamool Congress leader was rescued from the house and taken to hospital for treatment.
According to police, Biswas suffered injuries to his arms and legs. His condition was later described as stable.
Eyewitnesses said smoke was seen coming from the second floor of the MLA's residence at around 11 am. After noticing the smoke, family members and local residents raised an alarm and informed the authorities.
The fire department and West Bengal Police personnel soon reached the residence. The MLA was rescued from the house and subsequently taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
The exact cause of the fire has not yet been established. Authorities are expected to investigate how the fire started and assess the extent of damage to the residence.
The incident comes as political leaders and supporters expressed concern over Biswas's condition. Leader of Opposition and Democratic Trinamool Congress leader Ritabrata Banerjee said he was “deeply disturbed and pained” by the news of Bayron Biswas being injured.
Police said the MLA's condition was stable after he received medical attention. Further details regarding the circumstances of the fire and the investigation are awaited.
