AG Cricket Final: Sooryavanshi vs Pakistan offies, in land of rising sun

India and Pakistan will meet for the Asian Games cricket gold medal in Japan after the rain-affected schedule finally resumed. The spotlight will be on 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has repeatedly produced major performances in high-pressure matches in 2026. AG Cricket Final: Sooryavanshi vs Pakistan offies, in land of rising sun

After days of rain disrupted the Asian Games cricket schedule in Japan, the weather has finally relented, setting up a highly anticipated India-Pakistan final for the gold medal at Korogi Sports Park on Saturday.

India enter the contest with several established names, but much of the attention is expected to be on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the 15-year-old batter who has repeatedly shown an ability to perform when the occasion demands it.

Sooryavanshi may still be a teenager, but his performances during 2026 have already included several innings on major stages. His ability to score quickly and take on bowling attacks has made him one of the most closely watched players in the Indian side.

The Asian Games final, however, presents a different challenge.

Pakistan are expected to test the young batter with spin, potentially creating a contest between Sooryavanshi’s aggressive approach and Pakistan’s ability to control him through slower bowling.

A young batter with a taste for big occasions

One of the first major indications of Sooryavanshi’s ability to handle pressure came during the Under-19 World Cup final.

Playing against England, he produced an extraordinary innings of 175 runs from just 80 balls. His explosive batting helped India secure a 100-run victory and demonstrated his ability to produce a match-defining performance when the stakes were high.

The innings also showed the attacking style that has become associated with Sooryavanshi. Rather than allowing the pressure of a final to restrict his stroke-making, he attacked the opposition and scored at a remarkable rate.

That performance was followed by another opportunity to perform on a much bigger stage.

Success against senior opposition

A few months after his Under-19 World Cup performance, Sooryavanshi showed that his aggressive batting was not limited to youth cricket.

Playing for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, he produced two important performances during the knockout stage.

In the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he smashed 97 runs from 26 balls, producing another highly aggressive innings in a high-pressure match.

He followed that with 96 off 47 balls against Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2.

The consistency of his performances in the knockout stage was particularly notable. Instead of being overwhelmed by the pressure associated with elimination matches, he continued to attack the bowling.

His performances across the IPL season eventually saw him finish as the Orange Cap winner, further highlighting the scale of his contribution.

A different challenge in Japan

The India-Pakistan final at the Asian Games will nevertheless provide a different examination.

Pakistan’s bowling attack is expected to use spin to challenge Sooryavanshi. Facing spin can require a different approach from the kind of high-tempo batting that has brought him success against pace-heavy attacks.

The conditions and match situation could therefore influence how he approaches the innings.

For India, Sooryavanshi’s ability to provide a fast start could be an important component of the batting strategy. At the same time, Pakistan’s bowlers will be looking for ways to prevent him from settling into the kind of rhythm he found during the Under-19 World Cup and IPL knockout matches.

The contest will therefore not simply be about whether Sooryavanshi can produce another spectacular score. It will also be about how he responds when an opposition specifically targets one of his potential areas of challenge.

India-Pakistan adds another layer

An Asian Games final between India and Pakistan naturally brings additional attention because of the history between the two cricketing sides.

The gold-medal match gives both teams an opportunity to finish the tournament with the top prize. With the weather finally allowing the cricket schedule to progress, the focus now shifts entirely to the contest at Korogi Sports Park.

India have several experienced and recognised names in their squad, but Sooryavanshi’s recent record means he will remain one of the players Pakistan will have to plan for carefully.

His performances in the Under-19 World Cup final and the IPL knockout stage have established a pattern: when the occasion becomes bigger, he has shown an ability to produce significant contributions.

The Asian Games final will provide another opportunity to see how that approach translates to international competition against Pakistan.

For the 15-year-old, the challenge will be particularly intriguing. He has already demonstrated that he can score heavily on big occasions. But with Pakistan likely to employ spin as a key part of their strategy, the final could demand patience and adaptability alongside his trademark attacking intent.

India’s hopes of winning the Asian Games cricket gold will depend on the collective performance of the team, but Sooryavanshi’s presence gives the final an additional individual storyline.

On Saturday, in Japan, the teenager will have another major stage on which to test himself.
