Srinagar Member of Parliament Aga Ruhullah Mehdi has formally announced his decision to resign from the National Conference (NC), marking a major political development in Jammu and Kashmir. According to a statement shared by his office on social media, Ruhullah will resign from the party as well as his Lok Sabha seat on November 3, 2026.
The MP has strongly criticised the National Conference leadership, accusing the party of failing to honour its election promise of fighting for the restoration of Article 370. His decision comes after a prolonged period of disagreements with the party leadership over several political and administrative issues in Jammu and Kashmir.
Ruhullah's differences with the National Conference have reportedly continued for more than a year. The disagreements initially emerged over the issue of rationalisation of reservations in Jammu and Kashmir. Since then, relations between the Srinagar MP and the party leadership have remained strained.
In August this year, Ruhullah had written to National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and indicated that he was considering leaving the party. His latest announcement now makes his decision to resign official, with November 3 set as the date for the resignation from both the party and his parliamentary seat.
In a post shared by his office on Friday, the MP also made sharp remarks about the party's leadership. The statement criticised what it described as a family-controlled political structure in Jammu and Kashmir. It alleged that the leadership treated the region like an estate passed down through generations and expected people to vote without questioning those in power.
Ruhullah's criticism has added to the political tensions surrounding the National Conference, which is a prominent political party in Jammu and Kashmir. His remarks over Article 370 are particularly significant because the issue remains an important part of the region's political debate following the constitutional changes made in August 2019.
His planned resignation from the Lok Sabha seat, along with his exit from the National Conference, could have wider political implications in the region. The development is expected to draw attention to the differences within the party and the future political direction of the Srinagar MP.
For now, November 3, 2026, is the date announced by Ruhullah's office for his resignation. Further developments will depend on the formal resignation process and the political decisions that follow.
