New Delhi: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday and announced a massive investment plan that will see the technology giant invest $48 billion in India by 2030, with a major focus on artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure.
The announcement marks one of the largest commitments by a global technology company in India and highlights the country's growing importance as a hub for digital innovation, cloud computing and AI-driven services. Amazon said the fresh investment includes an additional $13 billion dedicated to expanding AI and cloud infrastructure, building on previously announced commitments.
According to the company, the investment will be used to expand Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centre capacity in Mumbai and Hyderabad. The enhanced infrastructure is expected to provide startups, enterprises and government organisations with greater access to AI chips, managed AI services, cloud technologies and developer tools.
Following his meeting with Modi, Jassy reiterated Amazon's long-term commitment to India and praised the country's digital transformation. He said Amazon's business priorities align closely with India's goals of expanding AI access, digitising small businesses, creating jobs and boosting exports.
The investment plan extends beyond AI and cloud computing. Amazon also intends to strengthen its e-commerce and logistics network across the country. The company plans to launch more than 20 new fulfilment centres and over 100 last-mile delivery stations, particularly targeting smaller cities and underserved regions.
Amazon's cumulative investments in India between 2010 and 2030 are now expected to exceed $88 billion, making the company one of the largest foreign investors in the country. Since entering the Indian market, Amazon says it has helped digitise millions of small businesses, generated employment opportunities and supported export growth through its marketplace ecosystem.
The company has also outlined ambitious long-term goals, including supporting 3.8 million jobs, enabling $80 billion in cumulative exports, extending AI benefits to millions of small businesses and providing AI education to government school students.
The announcement comes as major global technology firms intensify investments in India's digital infrastructure. Industry experts view the country as a strategic growth market due to its large internet user base, expanding startup ecosystem and increasing demand for AI and cloud services.
The meeting between Modi and Jassy is expected to further strengthen ties between the Indian government and one of the world's largest technology companies. As India pushes forward with its ambitions of becoming a global AI and digital economy leader, investments of this scale are likely to play a key role in shaping the country's technological future.
