New Delhi: Facing growing criticism from sections of young voters following the CJP-led student protests, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched an aggressive outreach campaign aimed at India's Gen Z electorate, embracing internet slang, meme culture and fitness influencers to reshape its public image.
According to party leaders and political observers, the BJP's latest communication strategy is designed to resonate with younger audiences who consume most of their political content on platforms such as Instagram, YouTube and X. From using phrases popular among Gen Z to collaborating with content creators and fitness personalities, the party is attempting to present a more relatable and contemporary image.
One of the campaign's notable features has been the use of "gym bro" culture—a term associated with fitness enthusiasts and motivational online communities. BJP leaders have increasingly appeared alongside young fitness influencers, while party-backed digital campaigns have incorporated memes, trending audio clips and informal language to engage first-time voters.
The shift comes after the nationwide CJP protests, which witnessed significant participation from students and young professionals. The demonstrations, centred on examination-related issues and education reforms, generated substantial traction on social media, highlighting the growing political influence of digitally connected youth.
Political strategists believe the BJP recognises that traditional campaigning alone may not be sufficient to appeal to younger demographics. Instead, the party is seeking to communicate through the same platforms, language and cultural references that dominate Gen Z's online conversations.
Beyond social media messaging, the BJP has also increased its engagement with campus organisations, entrepreneurs, start-up founders and sports communities. Party leaders have highlighted initiatives related to employment, digital innovation, entrepreneurship and skill development, arguing that these issues remain central to young India's aspirations.
Opposition parties, however, have questioned the effectiveness of the strategy, alleging that branding exercises cannot substitute policy responses to concerns raised by students during the recent protests. They argue that issues such as examination integrity, employment opportunities and education reforms require concrete action rather than digital campaigns.
Political analysts note that India's youth vote is becoming increasingly influential, with millions of first-time voters expected to participate in upcoming elections. As a result, parties across the political spectrum are investing heavily in digital communication, influencer outreach and social media engagement to shape public opinion.
Whether the BJP's embrace of Gen Z culture translates into electoral gains remains to be seen. However, the party's latest campaign underscores the growing importance of online narratives, youth influencers and internet culture in modern Indian politics.
