All About CJP's 'Saakshi' Platform to Collect Evidence From July 20 Student Protest Crackdown at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has unveiled 'Saakshi', an online platform designed to gather evidence from the July 20 student protest crackdown at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The initiative invites protesters, journalists, bystanders and other eyewitnesses to upload photographs, videos and first-hand accounts documenting the events of the day.

According to CJP leaders, the platform aims to create a central repository of evidence that can help establish an accurate record of what transpired during the demonstrations. The organisation said submissions may assist lawyers, fact-finding teams and independent investigators examining allegations of excessive force and other actions during the police operation.

The July 20 protest, organised as part of the broader nationwide student movement demanding accountability over alleged examination irregularities and education reforms, witnessed heavy police deployment in the national capital. Several protesters claimed they were detained or injured during the operation, while authorities maintained that action was taken to enforce law and order after restrictions were allegedly violated.

CJP said Saakshi has been built to accept multiple forms of evidence, including videos, photographs, audio recordings and written testimonies. Contributors are encouraged to provide details such as the time, location and circumstances under which the material was recorded to help verify its authenticity.

The organisation has also appealed to medical professionals, legal observers, journalists and volunteers present during the protest to share any relevant documentation, including medical records, media footage and eyewitness statements that could strengthen the evidentiary record.

According to the platform's guidelines, uploaded material will undergo a verification process before being archived. CJP says the collected evidence may be used to support legal petitions, public reports and advocacy efforts seeking accountability, while also helping counter misinformation surrounding the events.

The launch of Saakshi comes amid continuing political and legal debate over the handling of the July 20 demonstrations. Opposition parties and civil society groups have questioned the police response, while authorities have defended their actions, stating that they acted within the framework of the law to maintain public order.

Digital rights experts say citizen-generated documentation has become increasingly important in recording major public events. However, they also stress the need for proper verification, privacy safeguards and secure handling of sensitive material before it is relied upon in legal or public proceedings.

As discussions over the student movement continue, CJP has urged anyone who witnessed the events at Jantar Mantar to contribute authentic material through Saakshi, saying the initiative is intended to preserve evidence and ensure that multiple perspectives surrounding the protest are documented.
