Delhi Police Orders Takedown of Offensive Posts Targeting PM Modi During Gen Z Protests

New Delhi: Delhi Police has asked multiple social media platforms to take down posts and videos containing offensive and abusive content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following the recent Gen Z-led protests that erupted over the alleged NEET paper leak and broader demands for education reforms.

According to officials, the action is focused on online content shared during and after demonstrations at Jantar Mantar and the July 20 "Sansad Chalo" march, where several social media posts allegedly violated legal provisions by using abusive language against the Prime Minister. Police have reportedly instructed platforms to remove such content while continuing to monitor online activity linked to the protests.

The latest directive follows days of unrest in the capital, where thousands of students and young protesters gathered to demand accountability over alleged irregularities in national entrance examinations. Some demonstrations turned violent, leading to clashes with police, injuries, detentions, and an intensified security response.

Officials said the social media review is part of broader efforts to prevent the circulation of content that could inflame tensions or incite further unrest. Authorities are examining posts across multiple platforms to determine whether they breach provisions of Indian law relating to abusive, inflammatory, or unlawful online content.

The youth-led movement, widely referred to as the "Gen Z" or "Cockroach" protests, initially emerged over alleged examination paper leaks but has since expanded into a wider campaign demanding greater transparency, education reforms, and political accountability. Protesters have used satire, memes, and viral social media campaigns to amplify their message, making the movement one of the most visible youth mobilisations in recent years.

The police action has also reignited debate over the balance between maintaining public order and protecting freedom of expression online. While authorities maintain that the takedown requests are aimed at content containing abusive or unlawful language, digital rights advocates have previously raised concerns over the scope of online content moderation and government takedown requests.
