Haldwani: An FIR has been registered against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in Haldwani following a complaint alleging that his remarks about a ‘purification’ ritual at a public meeting venue gave the incident a casteist interpretation.
The controversy is linked to a ritual reportedly conducted at Ramlila Ground in Haldwani after a public meeting addressed by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Police said the FIR followed a complaint by a member of the local Valmiki community.
FIR registered following complaint
According to police and media reports, the complaint alleged that Rahul Gandhi's remarks about the ritual hurt the sentiments of members of the community involved.
The FIR has reportedly been registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to allegations including promoting enmity between groups and deliberate acts intended to outrage religious feelings. Provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, have also been invoked.
The complainant reportedly stated that people from different social backgrounds, including members of Scheduled Castes, participated in the ritual and that it was not connected to Mallikarjun Kharge's caste.
How the controversy began
The political controversy began after a ‘purification yajna’ or ritual was reportedly held at the Ramlila Ground on August 11, following a public meeting addressed by Mallikarjun Kharge on August 8.
The Congress alleged that the ritual reflected a discriminatory mindset and linked it to caste-based prejudice.
However, organisers and BJP leaders rejected the caste angle, claiming that the ritual and cleanliness exercise were carried out for other reasons and were not connected to Kharge's caste or identity.
Rahul Gandhi had demanded action
At a press conference in New Delhi on August 29, Rahul Gandhi criticised the reported incident and demanded legal action against those involved in the ‘purification’ ritual.
He described the incident as a reflection of untouchability and alleged discrimination against the Scheduled Caste community.
Congress leaders argued that the ritual conducted after Kharge's programme raised serious questions about caste-based attitudes and demanded action under the SC/ST Act.
BJP rejects Congress allegations
The BJP rejected the Congress's allegations and denied that the ritual had any caste-based motivation.
Party leaders and organisers maintained that the ceremony was linked to a cleanliness drive and other concerns related to the condition of the venue.
The disagreement over the motive behind the ritual has now developed into a major political confrontation between the Congress and the BJP.
Congress reacts to FIR
The FIR against Rahul Gandhi has drawn strong criticism from Congress leaders.
The party has described the action as politically motivated and has accused its opponents of attempting to suppress voices raising issues related to caste discrimination and social justice.
Congress leaders have also launched protests and maintained that their political fight against what they describe as casteist behaviour will continue.
Political row intensifies
The development has added a legal dimension to an already intense political controversy.
The issue now involves competing narratives: the Congress maintains that the ‘purification’ ritual was discriminatory, while the complainant, organisers and BJP leaders reject the caste-based interpretation.
With an FIR now registered against Rahul Gandhi, the controversy is likely to remain at the centre of political debate in Uttarakhand and at the national level.
Further developments in the police investigation and possible responses from Rahul Gandhi and Congress leaders will be closely watched.
