Gurugram Hit-and-Run Accused Kalyan Bainsla, Cousin Sent to 2-Day Police Remand

Gurugram: A Gurugram court on Wednesday sent Kalyan Bainsla and his cousin Lavnish to two-day police remand in connection with the alleged hit-and-run involving a woman biker on Golf Course Road, police and court-related reports said. The remand will remain in effect until September 18.

Police have said they want to question the two accused about the incident, identify any other people who may have been involved and recreate the sequence of events at the crime scene. The defence opposed the police request for custody and raised objections to the additional charges invoked in the case.

Woman biker allegedly hit on Golf Course Road

The incident took place on Sunday morning on Gurugram's Golf Course Road when Delhi resident Shivani Chauhan, also known as Sia, was riding a motorcycle with a group of bikers.

According to police, footage recorded by cameras mounted on the motorcycles showed a white Maruti Ciaz allegedly swerving towards Chauhan's motorcycle and hitting it. She was thrown from the bike and sustained injuries. The incident subsequently gained widespread attention after footage was shared on social media.

Police initially registered a case under provisions relating to rash driving and endangering personal safety. After examining CCTV and motorcycle-camera footage, investigators added Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to attempt to murder, along with Section 61 concerning criminal conspiracy, according to police. Sections 78 and 79 were also added following the woman's statement, police said.

Bainsla arrested in Rajasthan

Bainsla, 33, was arrested by a Crime Branch team in Rajasthan on Tuesday, along with his cousin Lavnish, 34. Police said the two were traced to Dausa after allegedly leaving Palwal and switching off their mobile phones.

The car allegedly involved in the collision was later recovered from Palwal, while the two men were travelling in another vehicle when they were arrested, according to police.

Police have also alleged that Bainsla attempted to flee while being brought back to Gurugram after asking officers to stop so he could urinate. He reportedly sustained injuries during the attempt and was taken to a hospital before being brought back into custody.

Accused disputes allegation of deliberate collision

Bainsla has denied deliberately hitting the woman biker. In an earlier media interaction, he claimed that the collision happened after bikers repeatedly overtook his vehicle and slowed down in front of it. He said he had not known that a woman was riding the motorcycle and described the collision as an accident.

The police version differs. Investigators have said CCTV and motorcycle footage indicate that the car followed Chauhan before allegedly ramming her motorcycle, leading them to invoke the more serious attempt-to-murder provision. The allegations remain subject to the ongoing investigation and judicial proceedings.

Police to recreate crime scene

During the two-day remand, investigators are expected to question Bainsla and Lavnish about the events leading up to and following the collision. Police also plan to recreate the crime scene to establish the sequence of events and gather further evidence.

The case remains under investigation, and the court's remand order does not amount to a finding of guilt against either accused.
