India defeated Pakistan by 19 runs in the Asian Games T20 cricket final at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan, to claim the gold medal in a high-scoring contest.
The victory added another major achievement to India’s Asian Games campaign and came in a final that produced plenty of runs and several important individual performances.
India’s innings was built around two contrasting but highly effective knocks from Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma. The pair scored fifties and provided the foundation for India’s total of 211 runs.
Shivam Dube also contributed with a timely cameo, helping India push the score beyond the 200-run mark despite the rest of the batting order finding conditions more difficult.
Abhishek Sharma sets the tone
Abhishek Sharma provided India with an aggressive start during the powerplay. He took the attack to both Pakistan’s spinners and fast bowlers, using his crease effectively and punishing deliveries that were short.
When Saim Ayub bowled short, Abhishek pulled the ball over wide long-on. He continued to attack the Pakistan bowling whenever opportunities appeared.
Ahmed Daniyal also came under pressure when he bowled back of a length, with Abhishek swinging the delivery over midwicket.
His aggressive approach gave India early momentum and allowed the team to build a substantial total in the first half of the innings.
Tilak Varma provides another crucial fifty
While Abhishek provided the attacking start, Tilak Varma played another important role in India's innings.
His fifty ensured that India's momentum was maintained after the early stages of the innings. Together, the contributions from Abhishek and Tilak helped India reach 211 despite the slower surface making stroke-making more challenging at times.
Shivam Dube then added valuable runs during his cameo, giving India the additional push needed during the final stages of the innings.
Pakistan face a target of 212
Chasing 212 for victory, Pakistan needed a strong start and a major contribution from their top order.
Hasan Nawaz took responsibility for the chase and produced an outstanding individual innings. He scored 96 runs, keeping Pakistan in contention deep into the second innings.
His knock provided Pakistan with the momentum required to challenge India's total and ensured that the final remained competitive.
However, Pakistan were unable to find enough support around Hasan Nawaz to complete the chase.
India's bowlers continued to apply pressure during the latter stages of the innings, preventing Pakistan from maintaining the required scoring rate.
India hold their nerve
With Pakistan needing runs towards the end of the chase, India managed to keep control of the match.
The Indian bowling attack made important breakthroughs and prevented Pakistan from converting Hasan Nawaz's individual effort into a match-winning partnership.
Pakistan eventually finished 19 runs short of India's total.
The result meant India successfully defended their score of 211 and secured the Asian Games T20 gold medal.
A high-scoring final
The final was notable for the contrasting performances of the two teams.
India's total was largely driven by Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma, with both batters scoring fifties. Pakistan, meanwhile, had Hasan Nawaz producing the highest individual score of the match with 96.
Despite Hasan's near-century, Pakistan could not find the collective batting performance needed to chase down India's total.
For India, the ability to recover from difficult passages and maintain the required pressure with the ball proved decisive.
India claim Asian Games gold
India's 19-run victory over Pakistan secured the T20 cricket gold medal at the Asian Games in Japan.
The match also added another memorable chapter to India-Pakistan cricket at a major multi-sport event, with India emerging victorious after a contest dominated by big scores and individual batting performances.
Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma's fifties formed the backbone of India's 211, while Hasan Nawaz's 96 gave Pakistan hope during the chase.
In the end, India's total proved sufficient as the team held on to win by 19 runs and take the Asian Games T20 gold.
